Chapter Twenty

AS MUCH AS I TRIED to deny it, I’d begun to grow accustomed to my rooms in the Talyadian palace. When my mind wasn’t going a mile a minute, it was almost peaceful to be so far removed from the conflicts raging around me and the throne back in Evrion. Did I feel guilty about that? Absolutely. And yet, part of me still belonged to Amber from Earth, who hadn’t even graduated high school.

But the stress and anxiety of waiting—for either Daria or Gareme—was making me stir-crazy. I held out for as long as I could, but eventually burst back through the door, much to the Guardian’s surprise.

“Your Royal Highness?” His brow immediately knit with concern. “Is something wrong?”

“No.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “I just want to take a walk. Stretch my legs a little. Under supervision, of course.” That particular battle was another I’d stopped investing so much time and energy into fighting.

“Of course,” he agreed. “I’ll escort you.”

“Thank you.” I let him get a little bit of a head start; they always liked to be one step ahead of me. I had tried to tell them that the worst of my renegade days were over, at least for now, but they seemed to need the reassurance.

Nonetheless, it felt amazing to get out of my room for a while. I kept my pace leisurely, taking the time to absorb the details of my surroundings. Unlike the palace in Evrion, the seat of Talyad’s royalty was pretty much always busy, corridors bustling, promenades and terraces dotted with clusters of finely dressed people. The place was like a small city all by itself, which was another reason I never really complained about the escort. It would’ve been so easy to get lost in there forever.

As we walked, I kept my ears open for any tidbits of information relevant to the million things swirling around in my head. Anything about Evrion, about the rebellion, about the state of the palace. And also, anything about where either Daria or Graeme might be. Sometimes it was hard to hear across the vast rooms. Voices tended to get lost in the acoustics. And I had to look as normal as possible.

Not that my presence ever went truly unnoticed. At least one person in every group we passed sneaked a look at me. Most were too polite to resort to outright staring, but I caught more than a few whispers as I went by.

“That’s her. Princess Ambrose of Evrion. I thought she might have been a myth.”

“Are they absolutely certain she’s not an impostor? She must be verified before she takes the throne!”

“She looks... normal.”

It took every ounce of willpower not to look back at the dude who said that last one, an unassuming man in a flowing tunic, and I wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. Because he was right; I did look normal. Up until my last few days on Earth, I had been completely normal.

None of which changed the fact that I wasn’t anymore.
