There were both pros and cons to Teoritta’s arrival.

One pro was that we weren’t working against the clock anymore. The Holy Knights could no longer detonate the scorched terrain seals without burying the goddess alive, too.

Another pro was that we now had a large supply of high-quality iron swords.

“I shall engrave my sacred seals! Pierce the ground with swords and construct a fence!” King Norgalle was acting like a military engineer for a change. “Allow me to thank you for gracing us with your presence, Goddess!”

“You can count on me, Norgalle.” Teoritta flashed a bold, brilliant smile. It bothered me a little how these two seemed to be on the same wavelength. “With me and my knight together, there’s no way we can lose.”

As long as we had Teoritta’s swords, we could engrave them with protective seals and construct an iron fence.

Right now, we needed to improvise a defensive position for ourselves. More faeries would be coming, and we needed to block them and kick up a ruckus. That would allow us to meet back up with the Holy Knights, who would probably be looking for us.

Now, on to the cons of Teoritta’s arrival—basically everything else.

“What are you doing?” I didn’t bother to hide my irritation. “Teoritta, what happened to the Holy Knights? Why are you here?”

“I am a goddess, Xylo,” she stated proudly. “I ran away. Do you honestly think a few humans could stop me?”

“Teoritta…”

“Now shower me with praise.” She stuck out her head as glittering sparks illuminated her smooth golden hair. “…You were in a pinch, and I saved you, didn’t I? Did I make it here in time? Was I useful?”

“You’re getting no praise from me.” I pushed her head away.

That must have made it clear I was mad. She looked like she was going to cry.

“Wh-why are you angry, my knight? Was I too late? But…” She bit her lip, determined to protest. “…It is your fault for leaving me like that! I will not allow you to treat me that way! What you did was an act of betrayal, and if you ever do it again—”

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m not expecting you to make yourself useful.”

I needed to be clear with her. I stood right in front of her and glared. Flames flickered in her eyes—no, those weren’t flames; they were tears.

She was crying. Dammit. Now it looked like I was bullying her.

“You don’t need to do me favors. I don’t want you to serve me.”

“…Then what?” Teoritta attempted a glare of her own. “What do you want from me?”

“Stop trying to die. You don’t have to help anyone or ‘be useful.’ Just shut up and live. Don’t stupidly throw your life away for someone else!”

“Yes, I understand.” I’d thought I was giving her a stern talking-to, but Teoritta just nodded, looking very pleased with herself. “It is precisely because you are this sort of person that you are worth risking my life for. I was not wrong when I chose you.
