Here I was, after all my years of writing letters and publishing fanzines yet knowing only a handful of comics fans in person, finally stepping into the pulsing heart of fandom. With a pang of regret that I had only a couple of hundred dollars to spend, I plunged into the ballroom like I was diving into a familiar swimming pool.

Bud Plant.

Moving through that room was like traveling through an amusement park ride—one never knew who or what one would find at the next booth, coming around the next corner, or making his way through the next crowd of fans. In this way I got to meet Jim Steranko, who was miffed when I asked him to sign not the cover but the inside splash page of a copy of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #2.

I couldn’t have been prouder when I discovered copies of Sense of Wonder #12 staring back at me from one of a group of tables overseen by Bud Plant, who greeted me with warmth. Yes, I fit right in.

At one point, I passed by a large fellow with slicked-back hair and a beer belly. “Hey, how are ya?” he asked cheerfully. It was none other than Phil Seuling himself. “Are ya having a good time?” he asked. I nodded enthusiastically and was about to introduce myself when he was hailed by someone else and turned to speak. I never did get to talk personally with Phil. Every time I ran into him at the con he was rushing madly about, dealing with one emergency or another.

The professional guests of the convention were anything but aloof. I encountered James Warren, publisher of a group of popular black-and-white magazines including Famous Monsters of Filmland, Creepy, and Eerie, who stopped to chat. When I mentioned that I was an artist looking for work in comics, he gave me his card.

“Call my editor at this number. His name is Bill DuBay. We’re looking for some help.”
