VI. “Supporting One Another”

On Monday, we visited classes at the Gaston Berger University in Saint Louis, and students explained some of their customs to us. I had already been initiated into most, but was particularly impressed when one of the young women talked about those of different religions in Senegal not only tolerating each other, but “supporting” one another.2 In another class on French punctuation, in preparation for thesis writing, I learned something which I had never noticed before, namely the necessary spaces before and after colons, semicolons, etc., which is important for the editing I will be doing on the volume of Senegalese short stories. After lunch at a camp restaurant, we headed back onto the island for some last minute tourism and gift shopping, though we agreed that many items could probably be found at the market for much less; still, it was a relief not to have to bargain.
