IV. Select equipment for safe voyaging.

a. Sail management. If you have hanked-on jibs, you need a jib downhaul led well aft to muzzle a flogging sail so you can safely go out on the foredeck. If you have furling headsails, ensure you have practiced strategies for containing the sail if the furling line or furler fail.

b. No low-clewed deck-sweeping jibs that could block your vision when you are heeled in a seaway. Low-cut sails, dodgers, lifeline spray cloths, and doghouses with misty windows can keep you from seeing a ship on a collision course.

c. Easy-to-use, permanently installed reefing (jiffy, slab, or pennant) with permanently installed reef point ties.

d. Lifelines which can stand the strains of a 200-pounder hitting them at high speed.

e. Chest high, at-sea lifelines.

f. Reversible or spare halyards.

g. Sufficient handholds and rails.

h. Boom vang that is easy to set and not only prevents accidental gybes but makes it easy to control planned gybes.

i. Climb-on-board steps so swimmers or someone who falls overboard can get out of the water easily.

j. Sea anchor (para-anchor or large drogue that can be used from the bow).

k. Proper bosun’s chair with safety line attached for going aloft even if you have mast steps

l. Selection of extra heavy ground tackle.

m. Hand-operated or electric anchor winch to save your back from damage and make warping easier.

n. A tender capable of carrying the full crew ashore in fresh winds.
