Relevance of Research

Though the importance of relationships has been emphasized, it might be thought that universities would pay a lot of attention to research in evaluating the worth of an educational approach. This notion stems from the idea that universities are the fountainheads of rationality. That myth has already been punctured. It should no longer be surprising that research counts for less than rhetoric when it comes to decisions regarding whether a university will be home to an SML programme.

There is now a good deal of research on SML. None the less, that is not the basis on which decisions are made. Lack of research is often used to justify a choice not to do something, but the existence of research is usually far from enough to lead to its being done. Decisions tend to be made on emotional grounds, and based on advantages to the individuals or institutions involved. This should not be a surprise when we consider that awareness of the ‘hidden curriculum’ mentioned earlier has had minimal effect on educational practice.
