Nipping

Discounting the few staying in the house, we bid the last of our guests a good night. Some had come with a designated driver. The rest, even the amused vampires, accepted the rides we’d arranged for them. And then there was just the four of us and a quiet house.

“Now,” I said to Solange.

“I know it’s late, Aubree,” she said. “But there’s something we need to discuss.”

“Now?” Dolores asked, smiling at her date.

“I’m afraid so,” Solange said. “Sidney, why don’t you walk Dolores to her room and make sure she has everything she needs, and then you can meet us in my office.”

“Save the conversation for when I get there,” I said. I slipped from her side and took Dolores’s arm. “Come on, you. It’s been a long day.”

I didn’t think Dolores was happy as I pulled her away from Aubree. I also thought the vampire figured out what the conversation was going to be about, although she gave nothing away. But I chatted somewhat inanely about how well the party had gone, and Dolores didn’t struggle as I pulled her upstairs.

Inside her bedroom, we hugged. “I hope you had a good time.”

“Amazing time,” she replied. “Sidney-”

I shut her up with a little peck of a kiss. “You know I love you.”

“And I love you, too,” she replied.

“Good night, Dolores.” We hugged once more, and then I slipped from the room, closing the door behind me.

Both vampires were waiting in Solange’s office downstairs by the time I arrived. They turned to me as I stepped into the room and closed the door. “Sidney-” Aubree began to say.

“You listen to me,” I said, advancing on her. As I drew near, she actually took a step backwards, but I finished closing the distance and poked her in the chest. “Solange made promises to me, and Dolores was one of those promises.” I poked her again. “She is not for you.”

“It was just a kiss.”

“Bullshit,” I hissed. “I will not have her dragged into this crap. Besides, she’s straight, and she’s just responding to your vamp thing.”

“She doesn’t kiss like she’s straight, and you know it,” Aubree replied.

“I don’t care. If she’s trying to figure something out, she doesn’t need the complexity of figuring it out with you. That ends in the same type of disaster as it did for me, and I won’t have it.” I spun to Solange. “You better back me up on this, or we have one huge problem.”

“Sidney,” Solange replied. “I would rather we come to an agreement than dictate. I really don’t like doing that.”

I pointed a finger at her but then spun back to Aubree. “Well?” I raised an eyebrow.

“It was just a kiss.”

“Bullshit!” I hissed again. “That was far more than a kiss. Tell me you wouldn’t be up in her room, right now, if we weren’t having this conversation.”

She offered an uncomfortable look, shifting weight and saying nothing.

“That’s what I thought,” I said. “If I’d been stronger after I was brought back here, I would have kept distance from her, to keep her out of all of this.
