Why was Aidan here? Business? Pleasure? Did he even know how to dance?

Averting my face, I ignored the exit and made my way along the wall while surreptitiously keeping track of him. He fit in here—tall, with short, dark hair, clearly human, but with a handsome roughness to his features, wearing loose cotton pants, the same old-style shirt, a deep blue vest with silver accents. He moved with ease among the small groups of Fae, stopping a couple of times to exchange a greeting with a few of them, all smiles.

I stood there, gaping like a thunderstruck fish. All smiles! Aidan Greaves being all smiles! Sure, the smiles weren’t exactly Ren levels, but who was this alien wearing my boyfriend’s face? I snapped my mouth shut and kept up with him as he walked across the ballroom to talk to a male Fae.

Aidan’s forehead grew its usual frown of concentration as they conversed, and I let out a small sigh of relief. Not taken over by aliens quite yet.

I didn’t dare get any closer, so I couldn’t hear what was being said, but it was obvious the two knew each other well. All the other Fae he had passed had appeared to. Why hadn’t he told me he attended these kinds of gatherings?

Why hadn’t he brought me to one?

This was clearly all business, no pleasure for him, so that was a small relief, but if he was worried about other Fae being curious about our connection, we could’ve arrived separately or something. What was wrong with him!

I wanted to march right over, take hold of his vest, and shake the living daylights out of him. Even the stunning sight of him in Fae formal attire didn’t abate my rapidly growing annoyance. What good was him being all hot and handsome if he didn’t send me a selfie so I could officially drool over him?

Fine, then.

I spun on my heel, trying to wipe the irritation off my face, and attempted to appear small and insignificant so nobody would notice me stomping back to the small exit and slipping out of the ballroom. Good thing I was wearing the fabric slippers.

Aidan might be here for his unending, godforsaken business—the jerk—but so was I.

Plenty of time to discuss things with him later.

I approached the refreshments table, checked that nobody nearby was looking my way, then ducked behind the curtain covering the nearby exit. For a second, I had the horrible thought that I was going to run smack into a locked door like in some children’s cartoon, but luckily the way was unencumbered.

A brightly lit hallway spread on both sides, made of the same beautiful gray stone, with the occasional painting hung on the walls. Music from the ballroom drifted through, echoing against the walls in an oddly distorted way. Probably magic.

Ignoring the sound, I started toward my left, opposite from where the portal room was. Any artifacts would be stored in the private rooms of Lord Iglia, and no Fae lord worth their salt would put their public portal room close to where they kept the good stuff.
