“Safe travels, Dr. Warner,” Ralph said, opening Finn’s door, and promising to collect her mail. “It’ll be on your counter,” he called out, patting the trunk with his hand as the vehicle moved forward.

“I packed sandwiches, drinks, and healthy snacks,” Rosa announced, pulling into traffic. “Hopefully, we’ll have enough that we won’t have to stop for meals. I know you’re in a hurry to get there.”

“I am. Thank you.”

“So, we’re going back to where you just were?”

“Yes.”

“Did you forget something?”

Finn took a breath, deciding how much she would tell her. “I need to do something,” she answered.

“Oh, okay,” Rosa responded, clearly not satisfied with her answer. She changed lanes, sped up, and slowed down. “So, it must be something pretty important?”

“Yes,” Finn answered, feeling an overwhelming urge to dial Kora’s number, dialing, and rolling to voicemail. “It’s Finn. Please call.” As she returned her phone to her inside pocket, she remembered that she’d met Kora in March. Dear God, she’s on the eve of a significant anniversary. And she knew from experience that anniversary reactions could be serious, sometimes resulting in days or even weeks of nightmares, flashbacks, and depression. And with that often came an elevated risk of suicide.

“Dr. Warner, are you okay? You look as white as a sheet.”

“Finn. After five years, I think it’s time you called me Finn. And yes, I’m okay.” She reached for her iPad, accessing the old newspaper article that she’d bookmarked, having a bad feeling that Kora had been visited by trauma, not once, but twice in March. She placed her reading device on the screen, reading:

March 30—According to authorities, a twenty-one-year-old prostitute has survived a vicious attack by a suspected serial killer/slasher. Beaten and cut from her mouth to her ear, Kora Anne Garver was found running naked down a main thoroughfare. She was transported to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, she left on foot before treatment could be completed. She is urged to return to the ER as her injury was deemed serious. The suspect, Wayne G. Crowtar, was captured on surveillance video as he ran barefoot from Garver’s Bronx motel room to his truck. He is wanted in connection with eight murders, all young prostitutes.

Sickened by the horror that Kora had experienced, terrified, and desperate to hold her, Finn rested her head against the passenger window.

And with that, Rosa pushed down on the accelerator.
