A new employee who floods out early and doesnât make it to the dance doesnât serve anyone. Having some of those conversations early on is important, as is making sure that they have systems and structures in place where they can capture priorities, the to-do list, and information.
We hired a twenty-two-year-old college graduate in our community services department to be an entry-level office assistantâher first job. All she had on her resume was the speech and debate team, a bachelorâs degree, AP classes, and her GPA (PS: never put your GPA on a resume!). Two weeks after she started, she tendered her letter of resignation. The HR manager asked why she was resigning and if something had happened.
The assistant said, âOh, no. The people are wonderful and outstanding. I had no idea what this office job would entail. I had no idea thereâd be so much going on.â I donât know if she didnât do her homework to understand the position, or if we failed to sit down with her on her first day to make sure she wouldnât feel so overwhelmed and flooded out that she had to resign. We probably could have done a better job as an organization to help her prepare and set up some tools and structures. She shouldnât have felt so overwhelmed that her only choice was to run to that dark room and turn off the lights.
