Chapter 12

Donovan locked the door behind him and then tossed his keys into a dish that sat on a table near the front door. His eyes quickly darted around his living room until they settled on Haley curled up on the couch, her computer resting on her lap, Malbec and Cabernet camped out on each side of her. Her hair was in a pony tail high on her head, and she wore a Cubs shirt coupled with a pair of gray, faded sweat pants. Her eyes were large and expectant when she looked up at him, and he found her lower lip pulled between her teeth, a habit he doubted she was aware of - but he was, just as he aware of everything else when it came to Haley Bennett. He knew then that he had never seen a more beautiful woman in his life. He wanted nothing more than to walk over to the couch and pull her into his arms. Only his anger with her prevented him from doing so. He was confident that she knew what Valera was looking for when he destroyed her house, and yet, she kept the knowledge to herself. He tucked his hands into the back pocket of his jeans.

“Colin called in some favors and everyone put in extra hours tonight, so you can go back to your place tomorrow. I contacted a cleaning company. They should be there by ten in the morning.” He walked through the living room and into the kitchen, the two rooms separated by only a half wall that also functioned as a kitchen bar, two stools pushed beneath it. He took a Coke from the refrigerator and opened it as he walked back into the living room. He sat down in a chair across from the couch, his gaze locked on Haley.

“There’s some pizza on top of the stove. I placed it on a plate and put foil over it. Your brother Liam brought it over.”

Probably as an excuse to check out Haley, he thought grudgingly, as Liam was typically not that thoughtful, although Haley was a woman, so maybe his efforts had been sincere.

“Thanks. Colin and I grabbed a burger earlier this evening.”

Haley unfolded her legs from the couch before she set her laptop on the coffee table in front of her and placed her feet on the floor. “I don’t think Liam was too happy to stand guard over me, even if it was simply to watch the football game while I worked on my computer.”

Donovan retrieved his Coke from the coffee table and gave her a perplexed look, his eyebrows furrowed in a query. “Why do you think that?”

“I don’t know. It’s just that he kept mentioning how he would typically be out on a date tonight, but instead had agreed to stay home when you asked. I bet I could tell you at least three places that he told me that he likes to take his dates for dinner. He even recited the top ten best places to take a date in Chicago that he downloaded from Yelp.
