Shayla pulls up to the kids’ school and I climb out to help Joanna out. She was quiet this morning and I want to make sure she is okay. “You have a good day, baby.”

“Mummy.” She pulls me close and asks quietly. “Is Marcus mad at me? Is that why we haven’t seen him?”

My heart breaks and anger fills me, but I keep it together. “No, baby. He’s not mad at you. I’m not sure what’s going on with him, but it has nothing to do with you.” I kiss her cheek. “Now have a good day.”

Grant grabs her hand and walks her to the door as I climb back in the SUV. Thankfully, Shayla is quiet, but unfortunately it doesn’t last long. “What happened?”

My eyes burn. “I don’t know. He was weird when he brought Joanna home after the bookstore. Was he being weird when he brought Grant home?”

“Not at all. He was holding Chance and then he just got up and they left.” She glances at me. “I can’t think of anything that would have happened that would cause him to get weird.”

I turn to look out the window. Will I see him at the office? He’s been out almost all week. Maybe he’s just avoiding me.

Once we reach the office we climb on the elevator. “Please don’t say anything about this to anyone,” I tell Shayla. It’s not that I don’t trust her, but I’m used to my friends back home in England who couldn’t keep their mouths shut.

She grabs my hand. “Of course. Just know that I’m here for you and whatever you need.”

The doors slide open, and I head toward my office. Luckily, it’s time for payroll, so I get everything ready and then send it to Jack to sign off on, and then I send it in.

I’ve got to use the bathroom. I’m almost to the ladies’ room when I hear his voice coming from the conference room. Without thinking, I move toward the doorway.

I stop and find Marcus and Reece talking. They don’t notice me at first, but I can tell the minute he notices me. Stepping further in the room, I turn to Reece. “Can I talk to Marcus for a second?”

He nods and then stands. “Of course, sweetheart. You take all the time you need.”

As soon as the door closes with a quiet snick, I turn to Marcus, and he stands. “Hey.”

That’s it, that is all he’s going to say. I move toward him, my heart beating rapidly. I’ve never been one to stand up for myself with the opposite sex. Joanna’s father was a wanker that had other girls on the side, and when I got pregnant shortly after he took my virginity, he told me to have an abortion.

I refused, so he refused to have anything to do with her. I needed the help with Joanna while I finished school so I moved home. It turned into a major blessing because when Dad got sick, I was able to help care for him.
