It felt as though time moved in slow motion while Anita moved at regular speed. Every day felt like three, and by the time a few months had gone by, Anita felt like it had been lifetimes since she made the discovery that had changed her life. Each bitter moment of that slowed-down time hurt, knowing that she’d caused irreparable damage to her friend. But there was nothing she could do about that. All she could do was try to figure out a way to vanquish The Order for good.

It was a delicate situation she found herself in. Not only had she removed herself from their ranks, she’d also put herself on their radar as a potential threat, especially with her stupid mention to Luka about the “filthy lies” she’d discovered. Showing that particular card was a rookie mistake. On top of that, all outside sources were out. If she exposed the hunters’ nefarious deeds to the world, it could potentially backfire and put the mermaids in even more danger. The hunters’ organizations that had existed for hundreds of years had dissolved one after the other as time went on, younger generations rebelling against their hold, and history erased the belief in mythical creatures like mermaids. If she left it all a secret the way it currently was, it kept the mermaids safer than they’d be if she were to bring the hunters’ actions to light.

She also couldn’t go back and take them down herself. She’d contemplated trying to maneuver her way back into the fold simply to dismantle them from the inside, but no one trusted her or her intentions anymore. Even if she could rally some support that would garner her entrance, her sister would see past her act in a second and would go at her from all angles to ensure no one trusted her enough to let her back into their good graces. Plus, the thought of bearing all of The Order’s malice just to keep up the pretense made her physically ill. She’d have to handle this all with great care and play the long game until the moment was right. She only hoped she had the wherewithal to recognize when that moment finally arrived.

Until it did, she’d bide her time, live her life, make the most of what she had, and learn to live with what she didn’t. She’d never really been one for company, but her family had always played a big role in her life and happiness. Now that she was truly alone, it was an enormous adjustment. Even simple things that she’d never noticed before were difficult to endure. The absolute silence in the house at all times. The way her unused voice was rusty when she had to talk to people during her trips into the island’s little towns.

She was immensely grateful for those interactions, though. Despite The Order’s strong influence on their little part of the island, and though many hunters were spread throughout its villages, there were still
