SAMUEL GOLDSMITH HAD A head start on Charles. He had known about William Hilton's lost will since he was a small child. His father told him a false tale about how their ancestor, after whom he was named, had discovered the Carolinas while William Hilton took all the credit for it. He was also told that Hilton had stolen money from all the mariners that risked their lives to discover the new colony. The name “Hilton Head” had always angered Samuel. He thought it should be “Goldsmith Head.” If he had anything to do about it, he would avenge Hilton, find the treasure, and tell the world what he earnestly believed to be the actual truth about the island.

Today, Goldsmith sat on a wooden chair on a long sandy beach at the southernmost part of the island. It was low tide, so the tight, compact sand stretched almost one hundred yards to the soft waves crashing on the coast. There was little wind, so the ocean was calm and a bright blue.

Goldsmith was not interested in doing any of the labor to find the treasure. He believed his job was already complete: He’d stolen the map, bought the supplies, arranged for travel to the island, organized the team, and told them where to dig.

His team consisted of five men, each with a particular skill. One was a sailor who knew the island and had gotten them safely to their destination while avoiding drug dealers. Two others were the muscle, heavily armed former marines hired to protect the team against natives or anyone else who got in their way. The other two were simple farmhands interested in the payday if they could find what Goldsmith had assured them was there.

Life is good, he thought. In the next few days, I may be one of the wealthiest men in the United States.
