Coefficient of friction

Since the friction (tangential force) changes proportionally to the force pressing two surfaces together (normal force), the ratio between the two forces is always constant. This ratio is usually called the coefficient of friction. Let us find the force necessary to make a man weighing 75 kilograms slide on a mat. According to experiments, the μ, or coefficient of friction between the sole of the foot and the mat is 1. If we assume μ to be equal to 1, we have the following equation:
