How the heck am I going to plan all of this?

Planning for preproduction is just like the hiring process we covered in part 1 of this chapter.

Here are the first things you have to do.

Sit down and create storyboards and shot lists with your cinematographer.

A storyboard is like a comic strip—you draw images in the sequence as they appear in your script in order to help you visualize your film. Seeing this in front of you as you are in preproduction is invaluable, as it is the first example of what your film will actually look like. And adding weeks to prep for your storyboard and your shot list is cheap compared with the enormous (and usually prohibitive) cost of adding time once you start shooting. Creating storyboards of your film will get you collaborating with your cinematographer. You’ll develop a shorthand and comfort level, and it will give you a creative bedrock to fall back upon when you start shooting.
