Chapter Fifteen

IT TOOK ME A MOMENT to remember where I was when I woke up – the soft sheets, the bright sunlight pouring through the window, they just weren’t familiar to me. When I sat up and looked around, rubbing my hand over my face, I remembered – I had come back to Jesse’s place last night. And we had spent the night together...

And now, he was nowhere to be seen.

I looked around, my eyes darting back and forth fearfully, scanning the room for any sign that he might still be here or that he might have been snatched while the two of us were trying to catch up on some sleep, but there was nothing, no indicator of anything wrong. There was no sign that he had even been in the bed beside me, apart from a slightly crumped pillowcase. I sprang out of the bed and went to throw on my clothes, trying to control the panic that felt like it was choking me. Had that man from last night followed us back here? I tried to remember what had happened after we’d had sex. I had been resting my head against his chest, listening to the sound of his heartbeat, and then I had fallen into a deep sleep and promised myself that I would deal with everything else tomorrow...

I should have stayed up and watched the door all night long to be certain that nobody was going to come after us. Dammit, how could I have been so stupid? So naïve? I wanted to scream. My hands were shaking as I tried to pull on my jeans, fingers bouncing uselessly off the buttons. I needed to get out of here and find him and make sure that he was safe. Even though, without him by my side, I felt as though the world was going to come crashing down on top of me.

I managed to throw on my clothes and darted for the stairs, eyes shooting this way and that with every step I took. Would I ever get over this paranoia? I doubted it. Hard to shake something like that when it had been beaten into you with such a harsh truth as the one I had been served last night.

The house was quiet – or at least, I thought it was, when I first emerged from the bedroom. After a few moments, I heard voices downstairs, and I paused to make sure that they belonged to the people I hoped they did. And, sure enough, as I leaned forward, I was certain that they belonged to Luke and Jesse.

Letting out a sigh of relief, I padded my way down the corridor toward them, trying not to let the paranoia get the better of me. Jesse had brought me here because he knew that it would be safe, and I had to trust him on that.

I followed the sound of their voices down to the kitchen, where Luke was making breakfast, and Jesse was sitting at the counter.
