Chapter 13
âMaybe this isnât a good idea.â Angel felt like she had dozens of butterflies the size of buzzards flapping their wings in her stomach. She hadnât been this nervous since the day she signed the final papers to purchase the building for Conrad Oil.
âHey, itâs all right, I promise.â Clancy shut the door of his Bronco and went around to open her door and gather up a load of luggage. âMy mother doesnât bite, you know. And besides, she and Tom are still honeymooners so they wonât even know weâre around most of the time.â
âYou should have called first. She canât say no now.â Angel nervously tugged her red shorts down and smoothed the front of a matching sleeveless shirt.
âClancy!â Meredith Morgan, immaculately groomed as always, met them at the front door. âAnd Angela? Is that really you all grown up? Come in. Tom and I just got home this morning. Weâve been watching for you since you called yesterday morning.â
âWe thought weâd move into the guesthouse out by the pool if thatâs all right,â Clancy said as he walked in the front door and set the bags down to hug his mother. âAngelâs still got the better part of two weeksâ vacation,â he explained.
Angel looked around at the inside of the house. It hadnât changed much since the last time she was there with her granny. The only thing new was the pool and guesthouse, which she could see through double glass sliding doors on the other side of the dining area.
âHello.â She stuck her hand out to Meredith when Clancy set the luggage down in the living room and went back for the rest.
âOh, donât you offer me that hand, girl. Come here and give me a hug. Iâm so sorry to hear about your grandmotherâs passing.â Meredith wrapped her arms around Angel and patted her back. âShe was a fine woman and a good friend. Now, tell me about that storm. Iâm glad you got out in time. We were really worried until Clancy called us.â
âWe didnât have service for hours and hours,â Angel answered. âI didnât know if Clancy was going to drive us out or paddle us out for a while there, but we finally reached dry ground. Are you sure this is all right? I can get a motel room.â
âThis is fine. Weâre glad to have you.â Meredith brushed away the idea with a flick of her hand. âThatâs what the guesthouse was built for. The pool isnât the ocean, but I bet the sunâs just as hot here, and you wonât have to worry about a storm.â
âThanks.â Angel nodded. âClancy, honey, let me help you take our things out to the guesthouse.â
âThis way.â He nodded toward the doors about the same time Tom opened them from the outside.
âMerrie,â he said, âthose ferns have got to be watered every day, and weâre going to have to plant more⦠Oh, hello, Clancy. Glad you kids made it home.â He grinned. âOh my goodness! Angel Conrad! Come here and give me a hug, child.
