Four slices of turkey, a scoop of mashed potatoes, a quarter of a green bean casserole, four rolls, and one slice of pie later, Danny shoved his plate forward and tossed his napkin onto the table.
âMrs. Claire, I canât eat another bite. That was delicious.â
Danny wasnât sure that he wouldnât need to get rolled down the hallway to the guest room he was spending the night in. He was glad Toby had insisted they stay the night. Even though the drive was short, Danny was minutes from falling into a food coma that threatened to last for years.
âIâm just glad you enjoyed everything, dear.â Tobyâs mom reached over and patted her husbandâs hand.
âWould you excuse me real quick?â Danny pushed his chair back.
âOf course.â
âYou off to call your Daddy?â Toby teased.
Danny glared at him, and Toby just smirked in reply, his cheeks darkening when his dad said, âThatâs nice of him to call his father on the holiday, Toby, donât tease.â
Danny fled the room before his embarrassment became evident. The guest room was at the end of the hallway and he let himself in, closing the door behind him with a quiet click. His phone was on the nightstand, charging. He unplugged it and dialed Jordanâs number. He answered on the first ring.
âThereâs my little boy.â
âDaddy.â Dannyâs entire body relaxed at the sound of Jordanâs voice, and he immediately regretted not letting Jordan fly him home.
âHow was your dinner with Toby?â
âReally good. Theyâre nice. I ate a lot. I kind of want to die.â Danny flopped backward onto the bed. The mattress squeaked beneath his weight. âWhat are you doing?â
âDrinking,â Jordan answered.
âAlone?â
âAlone,â Jordan confirmed. âI was able to fight your mother off and live to see another day.â
âDoes she think youâre with Monica?â Danny hated saying her name. He hated thinking about her. He hated she existed. And worse, he hated that he felt that way.
âI didnât tell her that I was, so I donât know. Monica is happily alone at her house drinking wine and weaving tapestry.â
âWhat?â
âShe has a loom. Itâs her hobby. I donât know, honestly. Iâve never seen it.â
Knowing Jordan hadnât been inside Monicaâs house was more reassuring than heâd expected. He sighed.
âSorry, I know Iâm the one who says I donât want to talk about her, but I keep bringing her up.â Danny rubbed his forehead.
âItâs okay,â Jordan said softly. âI understand. I donât want you to feel like youâre not allowed to feel the way you do about her.â
âIâm sorry I didnât let you fly me home,â Danny blurted, sitting up and crossing his legs. He picked at the frayed hem on his jeans.
âI know you are,â Jordan agreed. âMe too.â
âI miss you.â
âI miss you, little boy. More than you know.â Jordanâs words slurred together slightly.
âI wonât tell you no next time.â
Jordan made a rumbling sound in his throat that vibrated the phone in Dannyâs hand.
âAre you drunk?â Danny asked.
âIâm drinking alone, so most likely.â Jordan laughed gently, then quieted. He cleared his throat. âHow many days?â
Danny grinned.
