Four slices of turkey, a scoop of mashed potatoes, a quarter of a green bean casserole, four rolls, and one slice of pie later, Danny shoved his plate forward and tossed his napkin onto the table.

“Mrs. Claire, I can’t eat another bite. That was delicious.”

Danny wasn’t sure that he wouldn’t need to get rolled down the hallway to the guest room he was spending the night in. He was glad Toby had insisted they stay the night. Even though the drive was short, Danny was minutes from falling into a food coma that threatened to last for years.

“I’m just glad you enjoyed everything, dear.” Toby’s mom reached over and patted her husband’s hand.

“Would you excuse me real quick?” Danny pushed his chair back.

“Of course.”

“You off to call your Daddy?” Toby teased.

Danny glared at him, and Toby just smirked in reply, his cheeks darkening when his dad said, “That’s nice of him to call his father on the holiday, Toby, don’t tease.”

Danny fled the room before his embarrassment became evident. The guest room was at the end of the hallway and he let himself in, closing the door behind him with a quiet click. His phone was on the nightstand, charging. He unplugged it and dialed Jordan’s number. He answered on the first ring.

“There’s my little boy.”

“Daddy.” Danny’s entire body relaxed at the sound of Jordan’s voice, and he immediately regretted not letting Jordan fly him home.

“How was your dinner with Toby?”

“Really good. They’re nice. I ate a lot. I kind of want to die.” Danny flopped backward onto the bed. The mattress squeaked beneath his weight. “What are you doing?”

“Drinking,” Jordan answered.

“Alone?”

“Alone,” Jordan confirmed. “I was able to fight your mother off and live to see another day.”

“Does she think you’re with Monica?” Danny hated saying her name. He hated thinking about her. He hated she existed. And worse, he hated that he felt that way.

“I didn’t tell her that I was, so I don’t know. Monica is happily alone at her house drinking wine and weaving tapestry.”

“What?”

“She has a loom. It’s her hobby. I don’t know, honestly. I’ve never seen it.”

Knowing Jordan hadn’t been inside Monica’s house was more reassuring than he’d expected. He sighed.

“Sorry, I know I’m the one who says I don’t want to talk about her, but I keep bringing her up.” Danny rubbed his forehead.

“It’s okay,” Jordan said softly. “I understand. I don’t want you to feel like you’re not allowed to feel the way you do about her.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t let you fly me home,” Danny blurted, sitting up and crossing his legs. He picked at the frayed hem on his jeans.

“I know you are,” Jordan agreed. “Me too.”

“I miss you.”

“I miss you, little boy. More than you know.” Jordan’s words slurred together slightly.

“I won’t tell you no next time.”

Jordan made a rumbling sound in his throat that vibrated the phone in Danny’s hand.

“Are you drunk?” Danny asked.

“I’m drinking alone, so most likely.” Jordan laughed gently, then quieted. He cleared his throat. “How many days?”

Danny grinned.
