At about 9 am, Piper’s phone rang, and she saw it was Tom calling. After exchanging pleasantries, Tom informed her that the Sheriff was on the line and wanted to speak with her.

“Good morning, Piper,” the Sheriff greeted warmly as Piper picked up the call.

“Good morning, Sheriff,” Piper replied. “I’m doing okay this morning; thank you for asking.”

The Sheriff’s tone turned serious as he said, “I want you to know that I take you and your daughter’s safety very seriously. After what happened yesterday, I can’t take any chances.”

Piper appreciated the concern. “Thank you, Sheriff. I appreciate that.”

“I’ve assigned an armed officer to guard your hotel room for the rest of your stay in Oceanview,” the Sheriff informed her. “Feel free to go about your daily activities, he will do his job, and you wouldn’t even know he’s there.”

Piper was surprised but also relieved. “That’s very kind of you, Sheriff. Thank you.”

The Sheriff continued, “And I have some more news for you. I’ve heard about your work with Tom, and I’m impressed by your dedication and how you helped uncover the evidence in the abandoned city hall. So, going forward, I’m officially making you a member of the investigative team and Tom’s partner.”

Piper couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She was overjoyed and grateful. “Thank you so much, Sheriff. I won’t let you down. We would catch this killer soon.”

“I know you won’t,” the Sheriff replied confidently. “I believe your effort would lead to solid evidence to help nail this killer. Just keep doing what you’re doing, and let’s catch this maniacs before they strike again.”

“I will, Sheriff. Thank you for this opportunity,” Piper said sincerely.

After the call with the Sheriff, Piper turned back to Tom. “What just happened?” she asked, still processing the news.

Tom smiled. “The Sheriff was impressed with our findings at the library, and he wants you to be officially part of the team. He’s also concerned that the federal agents might try to take over the case, so he’s moving quickly to solidify our position.”

Piper nodded, feeling a sense of pride and responsibility. “I’m honored, Tom. And I’m determined to help catch this killer.”

“I know you will,” Tom said confidently. “Everything is moving fast now, especially after the news about the library finding hit the local news.”

Piper was surprised. “It’s already in the news?”

Tom nodded. “Word gets around quickly in a small town like this. But it’s good for us. It puts pressure on the killer and lets them know that we’re on their trail.”

“I hope it doesn’t put us in more danger,” Piper said, apprehensive.

“We’ll be careful,” Tom assured her. “For now, why don’t you rest for the morning? I’ll pick you up later, and we can head to the office to meet the rest of the team.”

Piper chuckled. “Do you think they’ll have a badge and gun waiting for me?”

Tom laughed. “Who knows? Maybe you’ll get lucky.”

“Alright then, I’ll see you later,” Piper said, excited and nervous.

“See you later, partner,” Tom replied, and they ended the call.
