Ah, fuck me, and fuck my life! Who the hell are these people?

Did I set off some kind of alarm when I entered the bunker, or building above? Then again, I’ve been down inside for well over an hour. Would it take that long for them to mobilize and get here?

Maybe they’re security guards patrolling the island?

I can see night-vision goggles, with automatic weapons held close to their chests, ready to fire in a split second.

Definitely not security guards.

Shit!

How far away are they? Are they right above? 20 acres is a lot of ground to cover. But they are here for me. They know exactly where I am.

I have no time to lose. I pray they are on the other side of the island near one of the other buildings, and I have time to get to the surface.

I quickly check the other cameras.

There’s a dark, sleek military-looking boat tied to the dilapidated dock.

FUCK!

At least I know how far they have to walk.

I run with every ounce of strength I have in me. I cannot be caught down here, caged with nowhere to go.

Slaughtered and then dumped with the others in the mass grave, there to rot until someone else finds this place hidden in plain sight.

My feet pound the hallway, then the concrete tunnel. I don’t bother closing the thick vault-like door. I take the concrete steps two at a time. Sweat is pouring down my body.

Fuck the steps go on forever. I’ve never run so far, or fast, in my life. There’s a strong possibility that they will not need to shoot me, I might just drop dead from a heart attack.

Why do I have to be so curious? Why couldn’t I have just replaced the small box and notebook? Just do the job I’m paid to.

I shoot out the hidden doorway like a bullet from a gun. I race through the building like I’m running a Tough Mudder obstacle course.

It dawns on me; I’m running through the structure when my boat is behind me. I first had to walk around the building to gain access.

I jump on a desk and then out a broken window.

The fresh air hits me like a slap in the face. I don’t stop; I rush into the foliage like a man processed by the devil himself.

It’s pouring with rain, like a tropical storm. It’s hard to see where I’m going the rain is so thick.

Hopefully, it will hide me.

Branches and leaves slash at my face and arms. Rain pours from the sky and water splashes from the leaves and ground. I am soaked through.

I ignore it all, expecting bullets to rip into my back. Drop me like a hunted animal.

I can taste blood in my mouth. My eyes are blurring from the effort. My lungs feel like they are going to explode.

I can feel the bag on my back bouncing around. The weight of my phone in my zipped pocket. My evidence.

Lucky my iPhone has an IP68 rating, meaning it’s waterproof for up to two meters for thirty minutes.
