CHAPTER 22

The drive home from the airport was filled with silence. Sharona was saddened by the fact that after spending a romantic evening together they had to part ways again. Diego glanced at her every so often, noticing that she was not as chirpy as she had been back at the villa earlier in the morning.

"Hey, why so quiet?" he asked.

"I'm just thinking."

"Thinking about what?"

"Us," said Sharona.

"That's good to know." He smiled.

Sharona desperately wanted to ask him when they would see each other again, but thought that she would rather wait for him to say something. They finally entered Edenvale and drove past Mel's Coffee Shop, which put a smile on Sharona's face. Diego didn't need to ask her why she was smiling, because he knew.

As they approached the street that Sharona's house was in, they noticed that it was blocked off by a police car. Edenvale was known for its safety, and that is the reason why she and Jason had bought the house there. It had a tight neighborhood watch and the only time police cars were in the area was when Mrs. Haricot had parked her car somewhere and could not remember where. She would call the police and claim that it was stolen, only to be told that her car was parked three houses away. Mrs. Haricot had early-onset Alzheimer's and lived alone, refusing to be put in an old home.

"I wonder where Mrs. Haricot parked her car this time?" Sharona said, but then her expression changed. "But that is strange… Why would they block off the road?"

Diego didn't respond. He continued driving and parked one block away from her street.

"This is odd… I wonder what happened," she said, concerned.

They walked down the block until they reached the police vehicle blocking her street. Sharona could see a crowd of people gathered farther down the road, very close to her home. As they came closer, she saw more police vehicles and an ambulance.

Diego picked J.J. up and carried him the rest of the way. Sharona's heart started to beat faster because she realized that the police scene had nothing to do with Mrs. Haricot, because she spotted her in the crowd of onlookers, just as inquisitive as anybody else about what was going on. She could feel in her gut that something was wrong.

Sharona suddenly started to slow down, her footsteps becoming heavier with every step she took closer to the crowd. Her mind tried to deal with what her eyes were seeing. Confused and unable to voice her thoughts, she pushed through the crowd ahead of Diego. There she stood in her own driveway in front of a gurney with a body bag that was undeniably not empty.

"Can you please step back, ma'am?" a police officer said, approaching her.

"This is my house… What is going on?" she said fearfully.

"Can you wait a minute, ma'am?" he said, signaling a tall blonde woman.

"Hi, I'm Detective Samantha Baker," the blonde said.

"Can someone please tell me what is going on here? Who is in the body bag?" Sharona asked frantically.
