Chapter 25

A couple of days later, Lottie had ridden her bike to Pretty Beach Surgery, had an antenatal checkup and arranged to meet Juliette in Maisy’s. She pushed open the door to the cafe and waved hello to Suntanned Pete who was sitting in the corner with a pot of tea. Smiling at Phia, who was right at the back behind the counter serving customers, Lottie took a seat in the corner by the window and gazed out to the pavement watching the world go by.

Five minutes later Phia came over with a bottle of water and two glasses. ‘Morning. How are you after Saturday night? What an evening that was! How are Connor and his brother now?’

Lottie smiled, thank goodness for Phia. ‘Ahh, thanks, you were brilliant taking over. Connor is okay now and the brother is recovering as much as one can be when one steps out in front of a bus.’

‘Ouch,’ Phia said, lowering her voice. ‘So, did he, err, do it on purpose?’

‘We still don’t know. According to someone at the bus stop, no. He was stumbling around on his phone trying to book a taxi and missed the edge of the pavement. The bus company is getting the CCTV.’

‘Cripes. Well, I’m glad everything is okay. What a turn up for the books. I felt awful for Connor. He really was rattled. What horrible news to receive especially in the middle of all that at the event.’

‘I know. He’s fine now though,’ Lottie replied nodding.

‘Good. I’m glad to hear it,’ Phia said, as she looked back to the counter and the growing queue. ‘Right, I better get back. I hope Connor’s brother recovers okay.’

Lottie smiled as Phia bustled back to the counter. She picked up the menu, read through, deliberated between cake and a muffin and then decided that neither of those was going to be enough and settled on an egg and cress sandwich.

Lottie stared out the window as Pretty Beach went about its business. She watched as Juliette in a beautiful pale pink tea dress parked and locked up her bike on the other side of the street, pulled the basket from the front and stood waiting to cross the road. A few minutes later Juliette pushed open the door to the cafe, looked around for Lottie and smiled when she saw her tucked in on the left by the window.

‘Sorry about that. My last appointment went a bit over and then I went home to change.’

‘Not a problem,’ Lottie replied. ‘How are you feeling? How’s Bella?’

‘She’s doing really well, touch wood,’ Juliette said with a sigh and patted the windowsill. ‘Anyway, what about you? Tell me more about what happened at the lighthouse. It all sounds like a bit of a nightmare.’

‘Ahh. Connor got a call from the doorman at the flats. He also works for the family in a way. He was the one who messaged Connor about the accident.’

‘So, the brother stepped in front of a bus? Is that what happened?’

‘Yep. The story is that he was on his phone trying to book a car.
