Brother Andrew was thinking about his next trip to see Butros. It had been several years since his first contact with the graduate student, and now he regularly visited at least once and sometimes twice per year. It was late evening and Brother Andrew was about to turn on the evening news before heading to bed when the phone rang. It was Butros.

“Brother Andrew, I have news for you. Ahmed, Mustafa, and Hassan have been released.”

For many months, Andrew, through letters from many friends, had kept pressure on the government to release the three men. He had also written the men personal letters to encourage them, though Butros said that as far as he knew none were delivered. “But don’t stop sending them,” he’d said. “The more letters that are sent to these men, the more the officials will realize that people around the world are watching this case.”

As the lawyer had predicted, the men had been held without charge for sixty days. Then legal procedures in the court system had resulted in their spending another six months in prison without formal charges being filed. When they’d finally appeared before a judge, he’d released them without any charge.

“Without formal charges,” the lawyer had explained to Butros, “we may never learn the real reason for their arrest.” And that was apparently what the government wanted—they were releasing the men because they were attracting too much international attention. But no explanations were needed because no charges had ever been made.

“How are the men doing?” Andrew asked.

“Quite well, considering. They are all very thin, and Nadira is determined to fatten them up. But other than that they are in wonderful spirits. And they have asked to talk with you.”

“Me? Why would they want to talk to me?”

“Because they have some exciting ideas about ministry and they want your advice.”

“So, Butros, does all of our pressure on the government mean MBBs will be safer now?”

“It may mean others are not arrested and imprisoned. However, I don’t think it will be easier. The government will simply become more subtle. There are other ways to handle these situations.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, for one thing they can lean on the families of MBBs.”

“So the families will pressure the MBBs to return to Islam?”

“Yes, and if they don’t, the families will kill them.”
