Chapter 12
Scarlet
Walking back to the party, I was assaulted by the sounds of music, laughter, and clinking wine glasses. The joy of the party going on was a stark contrast to the growing despair inside me. I feigned a calm stance after meeting Jynzl – the person Nick almost married.
Just having the idea made my heart ache. It felt like an invisible hand was squeezing it, making it very hard to breathe. I didn’t understand the sudden pain that was gripping my chest. Was it jealousy?
With that in mind, I stopped a server and asked for another vodka cranberry. I was going to need some liquid fortitude to get through the rest of the night. Nick silently sauntered next to me as I waited for the waiter to bring me my drink. I held it and swayed to the music, taking occasional sips as his friends continued chatting.
If for no other reason than the fact that I wanted this night to be just pure business, then I would remember this night forever.
When it was time for the newlyweds to leave for their honeymoon, I was hot. And it wasn’t only the alcohol warming my body. With each sip, Nick trailed his fingers up and down my back, making sure I didn’t lose balance, his hands lightly grazing the exposed skin of my shoulders.
“This is nice,” Nick whispered, his words full of longing.
I stared at him. I wasn’t positive that he even realized he’d spoken aloud.
“What do you mean?”
“Huh? I mean, it’s getting late. I should drive you home.” Nick scratched the back of his head as if trying to clear the cobwebs. He tapped the glass that I’d held for dear life as his other hand rested in the small of my back.
“Uh… You’re right. I think I should be going,” I replied, quite disappointed.
“Let’s go. Let’s get out of here.” He peeled my fingers from the glass and sat it on the table. When he wrapped both of my hands into one of his, I felt tinier and more feminine than I ever had in my life. He pulled, and I followed him out of the ballroom to the elevators.
When we got off the lift, I caught a whiff of Nick’s scent, setting me on fire. I didn’t know what was going on inside my head. But all I could think about how perfect this moment was.
Quietly, Nick pulled out the key for a suite room. Was he planning this all along? I should feel insulted, but I felt excited instead. I must be going crazy.
“I’ve always had this with me,” Nick explained.
I raised a brow and followed him inside the room and sat in the living area of the glamorous place. The lighting was dim, and the chandelier hanging over me added a romantic effect to the ambiance.
“Water?” he offered, pulling two bottles of water from the mini-fridge.
I gulped, hesitating for a moment, but nodded.
“You always carry a hotel room key for emergencies. Should I walk away now?” I pressed, looking at him, making sure there were no emotions printed on my face.
