It didn’t matter what was on TV nor that the popcorn needed more salt. The room was cozy and warm, and her place at Weston’s side decidedly comfortable. She dared herself to sit close, and over time, found her head dipping more and more towards his neck until, his arm about her shoulders, she was snuggled tight, one hand across his chest.

The hours slipped by, each more enjoyable than the last, and round about nine p.m., it finally started to snow. They raised their heads to look out the window, neither one caring to speak.

Her eyes dipped closed, body warmth and happiness sealing her thoughts. She wasn’t aware she’d dozed off until he shook her shoulder.

“Esther?”

She pulled herself upright, one hand rubbing her eye.

“Your cell phone rang.”

Leaning forward, she snagged it from the coffee table and checked the caller. “It was my mom. What time is it?” Her breath drew inward in a rush. “Eleven thirty! I was supposed to be home by now and ...” She pushed up from the couch, at the same time, dialing her mom’s number.

A snowy film had encrusted the window ledge, tiny fingers of ice formed on the glass. She blew on the surface and created a circle with the heat. “Mom? I’m sorry. I ... lost track of time. I didn’t mean to make you worry ... Yes, I’ll come right now, and we’ll be careful. I know the roads will be icy. Bye. Love you.”

She spun around. “I can’t believe I fell asleep.”

Weston stood up from the couch. “I didn’t want to wake you, and I confess wasn’t watching the time. I’m really sorry.”

Esther released the tension that had built in her chest. “It’s okay. I should have stayed awake.” It hit her then that their evening was over, and her heart squeezed. But she said nothing, instead, retrieving her coat from its place over the back of the couch and putting on her gloves and cap.

He drove her home in silence, holding her fingers in his all the way, and she gazed out at the wintry landscape. A fine dusting of snow had coated the lawn. He walked her to the door, their shoes leaving footprints behind them.

A shiver raced up her limbs, the persistent cold seeping into her bones, and she tugged her coat tighter about her. She moistened chapped lips. “I ... I want to say this and hang the consequences, as they say. I loved everything about today.” Her words rushed out. “Even almost falling.”

The doubts she’d had about him yesterday were entirely gone. She cared very little about the gift from her admirer and more about the kind, gentle man who’d brought it to her. Weston was real and sincere. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt her.

“Thank you for everything,” she added.

Weston shifted his feet, his hands crammed in his pockets. “I’m glad,” he said. “I ... I can call you?”

She nodded. “There’s Tuesday’s dinner at the church, too. You are coming, right?”

“I wouldn’t miss it,” he replied.
