Not surprisingly I had a pretty bad first night, I’d propped something up against the porch main door to keep it closed but kept waking at all the unknown sounds outside, not helped by the hard bed and the dampness that permeated the house. Lula “passed by” at 8.15am on her way to work and told me I looked “dreadful” – are we surprised?

There had been delays organising the transfer of funds from London meaning a planned visit to the bank had been postponed, and so the day passed with me investigating the house contents and reorganising them – we had inherited a lot of those traditional Greek wooden chairs with rush matting seats (I’m convinced they were designed to ensure good turnover of customers in tavernas as you really can’t sit in comfort on them for long). I was moving some from one room into another when I noticed tiny pyramids of fine sawdust on the tiled floor. Then I discerned more under the chaise longue; in fact all the wooden furniture in the house, and most doors and frames, were pitted with tiny little wormholes. On closer inspection where the infestation had become really bad the “treatment” used to restore the wood had been to mix up some stucco paste (kind of Polyfilla) and smear it over the holes, and then add a coat of paint. Much later we found that several main support beams in one room, neatly hidden behind a weird plastic tongue and groove low ceiling, were on the verge of collapsing as their ends, seated on top of the stone walls, had been dangerously reduced to a fine honeycomb by these woodworm. Fortunately we wanted to restore the high ceiling in this room and replaced them with worm-proofed beams as part of the works.
