CHAPTER 6

Booby Trap

Right at one PM, the bright light receded, and their vision returned.

“This looks like…a town…”

Llenn was standing in a city street. She promptly looked around. Fukaziroh was there, six feet away, also scanning the area.

All other teams were guaranteed to be at least one kilometer away, according to the rules, so there was no worry about imminent combat. But a powerful sniper rifle with .338 Lapua Magnum rounds or a 12.7 mm antimateriel rifle could easily shoot from that distance. If they had been in a clearing, they might have had to get down and crawl immediately from the beginning.

But here, they were surrounded by houses.

“We’re safe for now!” Llenn told Fukaziroh.

“Got it.”

Thanks to a handy communication item that adjusted volume on the fly, whether you whispered or shouted, your voice would enter your squadmates’ ears at a reasonable volume, neither too soft nor too loud. Even more impressive was the fact that the item had no distance limit, and it worked perfectly no matter where you went during Squad Jam—even inside or underground.

Once they’d confirmed they were safe, the next step was to check their location.

Llenn was standing in a foreign town.

Most of the buildings were one story, with the occasional two. It was a whole lot of plain, low-budget housing of an unfamiliar style, lined up in rows. She’d seen neighborhoods like this one in Hollywood movies before.

Along the main road was a line of storefronts, which were all shuttered up now. The streets connecting to the main road only featured houses.

The yards for the houses weren’t very big. They seemed crammed together. Given that the entire setting of the game was “postapocalyptic Earth,” it was a completely empty ghost town. The roofs and walls of the buildings were damaged, and many windows were broken. A number of power-line poles were tilted, the lines hanging low. The pavement was in terrible shape, often cracked and giving way to bursts of grass.

The sky overhead was clouded over. It was an eerie sight, dull gray with a little bit of GGO’s unique red tint to it.

Llenn’s pink color was most advantageous on clear days, when the off-kilter red atmosphere made the sun as red as during sunset.

“Hmm…”

The camo effect wasn’t going to be so useful this way. She might not be able to pull off any ambushes. Plus, the wind was blowing this time. On the ground, she felt a light breeze on her cheek with the occasional gust, but the clouds above were moving fast. It seemed to Llenn that they could’ve made the weather nice for the big event.

Temperature in VR games was calibrated such that it was always reasonably comfortable, no matter how you dressed. So there wasn’t any chill against the skin, but based on the sky and the dried-out plants, it appeared the season was set to winter on this map. In fact, it looked like it might snow.

“Llenn, come check this out!” Fukaziroh called.

She joined her on the side of the house and saw something odd.
