CHAPTER 8

A sharp, biting wind was blowing when I stepped out into the parking lot, leaving the mall.

I searched the rows of snow-covered cars, looking for Mrs. Aldridge’s dark blue Volvo. I knew the car well from all the times I had seen Todd step out of it, back before August, before he disappeared off the face of the earth.

“Mrs. Aldridge!” I yelled into the cold winter air. My voice seemed louder and crisper because of the cold. Winter always made sounds seem sharper than usual.

But no one answered.

“Mrs. Aldridge!” I called again.

Then I saw it. The Aldridges’ dark blue Volvo was pulling out of its parking space on the far side of the lot.

I had only one choice.

Holding the camera firmly in my hands so as not to drop it, I began running in the direction of the car.

“Wait! Wait, Mrs. Aldridge! Don’t go!” I shouted.

But my cries were in vain.

Mrs. Aldridge couldn’t hear me.

The car backed out of its space, crunching the snow beneath its tires. Its tailpipe coughed small clouds of exhaust fumes into the air.

Just as I reached the space where it had been parked, the car left the lot and turned right on Central Avenue.

I heaved a deep sigh of frustration and watched Mrs. Aldridge disappear into the grayness of the late afternoon.

They’ve all been lies. Every one of them. The candle is a fake, my so-called visions were fakes, and my father really is dead.

I didn’t want to cry. I didn’t want to think about any of it. I didn’t want to acknowledge the fact that the kids at school had been right.

I never predicted anything.

I don’t have any psychic powers.

I’m as big a fake as Madame Mysteria!

This last thought was just too much to consider.

I looked down at the camera I held in my hands. Todd’s camera.

Now, I don’t know much about cameras, but I know enough to recognize an expensive model when I see it. This was a fancy camera, all right.

I thought about Todd. About how his hands had once held this camera, too.

Then something very strange happened.

A weird sensation overcame me, standing there in the mall’s parking lot.

It was as if my feet were leaving the ground. I suddenly felt very light and airy.

Looking down at my feet, I saw that they were firmly on the ground. Several inches of snow covered my shoes.

But still the feeling kept coming over me in waves.

Suddenly, a searing hot surge pulsated up my arms into my spine and caused me to lose my breath for a second.

It was coming from the camera!

Without thinking, I slowly raised the camera to my face and looked through the viewfinder.

I blinked and swallowed hard at what I saw.

Trees!

I saw trees!

Well, that’s not so strange, I thought.

But then I lowered the camera and looked in the direction I had been pointing it.

I had pointed it right at one of the parked cars.

Looking through the viewfinder again, I was amazed to see trees where the car was supposed to be.
