Chapter Six
Nick knew Dana had left even before he opened his eyes or moved his hand to where she had slept.
“Damn it.” He pounded his fist into his pillow. “This is not how this was supposed to work out.”
He swung his legs to the edge of the bed, squinting from the bright sun shining through the windows. Reaching for his T-shirt, he frowned. He was sure he had left it on the chair after his workout, but it was missing. Nick laughed. Dana must have taken it. When they were dating, his shirts seemed to disappear and reappear at her house. He loved watching her walk around wearing his shirt. A tempting scent of pineapple and coconut lingered on his clothes when she gave them back to him.
Why was he torturing himself? She had left in the middle of the night and didn’t wake him. That should clearly explain where she stood.
He let out a frustrated sigh and headed for the shower. Damn if the bathroom didn’t smell like pineapples and coconuts. He had created one hell of a huge mess.

Dana heard her bedroom door squeak, but didn’t bother to uncover her head. “Go away, Amy.”
She was still mad at her friend for letting her walk blindly into the party with Nick there. The bed dipped as Amy sat on the edge. It was obvious she wasn’t going away.
“I’m sorry,” Amy said. “Just tell me what I can do, and I’ll do it. I feel really bad about this.”
Dana whipped the sheet off her face. “How could you do that to me? You knew what he meant to me. How could you put me in that position?”
Amy hesitated. “I was afraid if you knew Nick was there, you wouldn’t come.”
Dana sat up and stared at her friend. “You’re my best friend. I would do anything in this world to see you happy. It would have been nice to at least know. I could have prepared better to see him.”
“I’m so sorry, Dana. Really, I am. I know you’re angry about how he left, but he seemed so sincere and wanted to make up for the past. The guys had already planned it out, and you had your plane ticket by then. I thought if I told you about Nick, you wouldn’t come. I wanted you here so badly. It wouldn’t be the same without you by my side.”
Oh, geez. Now Dana felt like a selfish idiot. Of course Amy meant no harm. “It was such a shock. I’ve dreamed about him for five lonely, long years, but I didn’t think I’d see him again. I never worked through what would happen if I did.”
“Was it really that bad?” Amy asked.
Dana lowered her head, hoping Amy wouldn’t see the tears that formed at the corners of her eyes. She let out a heavy sigh and fought back the tears. “It was awful…and so wonderful at the same time.” She glanced at her best friend to see a smile cross Amy’s face. “When I saw him, he took my breath away, but then I got so mad and confused.
