Chapter 20

Zander

Ifeel like I’m being punished for something, and I’m not sure what. Pure misery was all I saw on Paige’s face the moment Sienna was visible to her, and it took a moment for her to gather her wits about her. Winston moves toward me with distrustful eyes on Sienna, and I don’t blame the dog for it in the least.

“Hey, Winston.” I crouch low, hoping that maybe the benefits of dog therapy I’ve read about over the years are real and he can heal the tidal waves of emotions crashing inside of me.

He enjoys the scratches, but I notice him eyeing up Sienna. The woman is wearing a thin pencil skirt, high heels, and a ton of makeup. Sure, many men would find the expensive clothing, perfect hair, and facial accents a big draw—I was not one of them.

Unlike Paige, who I think is aging like a fine wine, only getting better with each day that passes, Sienna looked prettier in high school. Her All-American cheerleader-blonde good looks have matured, but now she appears to be trying too hard to hang on to those younger days. I feel my lip curling as I inventory every feature, and I find her sadly lacking compared to Paige.

“Oh, is this your dog,” Sienna gushes as she bends to greet Winston.

“GRRRR,” the dog bares his teeth at her, which, for some reason, I find fitting.

“He is Paige’s dog,” I tell her, figuring that might explain everything to her.

Instead, she moves closer, seeming to take that as a challenge to assert herself further on the unsuspecting animal.

“I normally get along with all furbabies,” Sienna says happily, reaching out her arm again.

“Grrrrr,” Winston says, this time under his breath, as he turns to trot back to Paige.

“Well, I guess you win some, and you lose some,” I quip at her as I rise to my full height once again.

I hope that bought us enough time for Paige to pull herself together. I noticed that when she saw Sienna, she bent over. I’m sure it was from shock and not bowing as Sienna would have hoped. I hate that on top of everything else she is dealing with; I’m about to land another blow on her. I truly wish the ground would open and swallow me whole. At least then, I could escape what is coming next.

“Paige, I couldn’t believe it when I got this assignment,” Sienna gushes before I could provide context to Paige.

“Wait, what assignment?” Paige glances from me to Sienna. “I have not seen you in years, so I’m sorry. I need to be caught up on what is happening.”

“I know, you ran away like a scaredy cat after high school,” Sienna calls out in a sing-song voice, as I feel my shock cause my lungs to suspend movement.

“Sienna,” I chastise her with a furrow on my brow, as I can’t believe that was how she began.

“What are you doing here?” Paige asks. I can tell she is barely holding her anger in check.
