The entire day Bayley hadn’t been able to sit still. She’d gone from one worry to another. She didn’t want to disappoint Jenson. And she needed that scholarship. She smoothed her hands down the sides of the silky material of her dress.

Despite being pleased with her appearance and not being easily intimidated, the idea of meeting Jenson’s parents made her legs shake. She knew and worked with a number of respected and renowned doctors, but Jenson’s father’s status went beyond the others. But her nervousness tonight didn’t stem from the fact that Jenson’s father was such a well-respected man in the city, but from the knowledge he was Jenson’s parent.

Bayley was no Cinderella. She knew right where her shoes were. Jenson looked like every woman’s dream in his black tux with the shiny lapel. And his tie. It just made him more appealing. He had a sense of the dramatic. His hair had been recently trimmed. Clean-shaven and wearing a white shirt she would put him up against any man in the good looks department. He might be handsome but his personality drew her to him. He was an excellent doctor, a man with a big heart and a great sense of humor. She couldn’t ask for a more supportive friend.

She didn’t know what she had done to gain Jenson’s notice. She had to admit his attention built up her ego. Yet they were so different. From two different worlds. She needed to keep her eyes on the prize: finishing her medical training. There wasn’t space in her life for being sidetracked by her fascination with Jenson. She needed to remember he wouldn’t always be at her side. A fancy night out wasn’t her regular world.

Jenson stiffened beside her. She looked at the older couple coming in their direction. Jenson looked very much like his father. The only difference was the older version was heavier and had a smattering of gray hair. Jenson would age well.

There was no heartwarming, slapping-of-the-back type of greeting between father and son.

“I’m pleased to see you here,” his father said in a condescending tone.

“I came to support Bayley.” Jenson placed his hand at her waist. “She’s a finalist for the scholarship. Bayley, this is my father, Jim Hunt.”

“It’s nice to meet you, sir. Jenson has been a great addition to Atlanta Children’s.”

The older man gave her a long look at if he were figuring out a puzzle. “Is that so? We need him back at the clinic where he belongs.”

Bayley took a step back, but Jenson held her steady.

Jenson’s mother placed her hand on his father’s arm. “Jim, let’s not do that tonight.”

The woman standing next to the older Mr. Hunt was elegantly dressed in a gold gown that worked around her generous curves. Her smile was warm and welcoming. She immediately reached her arms out for a hug from her son, who dwarfed her in height. “Jenson, why don’t you come see your mama more?”

This woman Bayley could easily like.

Jenson stepped into his mother’s arms.
