Chapter Fourteen
âSo, whatâs going on with the cowboy?â Misty removed her rain jacket while Mei-Lin shook out her umbrella. Theyâd just walked into the Dockside, a shack-style eatery in the section of the docks where the fishing boats came in. They served the best fried fish sandwich made with the catch of the day, along with fries cooked in peanut oil. Misty was always tempted to try something else, but then fell back on her old standby. It was just too good.
âGee,â Mei-Lin joked. âDonât we even get to order first?â
âI already know what Iâm getting.â
âOf course you do.â
They took a seat at a small table beside a window. A choppy gray sea churned outside, jostling small fishing boats on roiling waves as a cloaking fog hugged the water. Misty thought of Lucasâs dad and how heâd held that job, rain or shine. Misty hadnât known Mr. Reyes well. Heâd been quiet-natured but had seemed kind and gentle. A lot like Lucas.
âWhy mess with perfection?â Misty answered. âWhat do you think youâll have?â
Mei-Lin picked up the menu wedged between a napkin holder and a catsup bottle. âHmm, probably the fried clam poâ boy.â
âIâm going for the fried fish sandwich and chips.â Lucas had tried to fix Misty another smoothie this morning but sheâd declined saying sheâd grab a power bar since she and Mei-Lin were lunching early. It was eleven thirty-five and the Dockside had just opened its doors to lunchtime customers. Already, the place was filling up. It was a hugely popular spot for locals.
âYou never change.â
âOh yes, I do.â
A ponytailed guy in an apron took their orders. Both also got coffee which sounded good on a dreary day, and it arrived in short order.
Mei-Lin grinned above her coffee mug. âWhat about you and Lucas? Things going well?â
Heat flooded Mistyâs face. âBetter than expected.â
âWhat?â Mei-Lin gave an excited whisper. âMist-yyy! Youâre going through theââ She paused and frowned. âWait. What happened to your hands? And wrists?â
Misty sipped from her coffee mug, then set it down. âTheyâre fine. I just fell off a moped.â
âA moped?â Mei-Lin gasped. âOh no! Were you hurt?â
Misty shook her head. âNot other than this.â She turned over her palms and the scrapes were so much better and she only still needed one bandage. She was surprised Mei-Lin had noticed anything.
Mei-Lin tasted her coffee, too. âWere you with Lucas?â
âYeah. Riding bikes out to the lighthouse.â
âOh, those kind of bikes.â Mei-Lin chuckled. âBet that was fun. Until you fell off.â
âYeah, it was.â Misty sipped from her coffee. âBefore and afterward.â
âWhat happened afterward?â
âLucas and I had lunch, and we talked. Talked a lot actually, but not about anything important. Mostly about work.â
Mei-Lin rolled her eyes. âBoring.â
âI know it sounds that way,â Misty confided, âbut it kind of wasnât.â
Mei-Lin angled forward. âNo?â
Mistyâs heart fluttered at the memory of sitting in the sunshine with Lucas, and especially at the way heâd looked at her at the top of the lighthouse after theyâd been feeling the wind. âIâm scared that somethingâs happening.
