Carl Wallin, a shoemaker, met John Nordstrom in the Yukon. In 1901, they formed a partnership and opened a shoe store in Seattle. At this point, Seattle was the center of Northwestern merchantiling, finance, and transportation. Wallin & Nordstrom Shoe Store would become Nordstrom Best in 1929. Seattle’s population was 80,671 in 1900. There were 21 civil engineers, 13 mining engineers, 7 mechanical engineers, and 4 electrical engineers, of whom Walter Gordon Clark was one. His company, Kilbourne and Clark (1899), made radiotelegraph equipment for oceangoing ships and had clients like the Australian Post Office. The equipment was also used by ships on the West Coast.
