Thirty minutes later, Ethan stood in the crowded parking lot with his team, listening to the scant details about Trent Morrison’s missing person case. His phone was going straight to voice mail, which either meant it was turned off, the battery had died, or he was out of cell range. Requesting his cell phone carrier to do a trace wouldn’t help, since the forest was dense and, once out of Fallport, there weren’t any towers to ping off of.

The chief of police, Simon Hill, was there, as was one of the two detectives Fallport employed, all the members of the investigative show, and a few onlookers.

As Lilly had warned, Tucker was almost giddy with excitement over everything that was happening. He was flitting here and there, ordering his camera operators to make sure to get everything on film. He was absolutely no help in actually pinpointing where his missing actor was, and Ethan wondered if he’d orchestrated this entire thing in order to try to get ratings. Trent was probably sitting warm and dry somewhere, having a good laugh at all the hubbub. In a day or so, he’d wander back out into the woods and pretend to stumble into the path of the SAR team.

Ethan didn’t like being so cynical, but he couldn’t help it. He’d met men like Tucker in the past and had no doubt the producer would do whatever it took to make sure his show was a success, thus ensuring he had a job in the future.

Luckily, Simon Hill was a good man who mostly let Ethan and his team do their thing. He didn’t try to insinuate himself into any of the searches they conducted. One of his staff ventured into the woods only if something criminal was found. He left the searching to the experts, which Ethan appreciated. The last thing they needed was to have someone else go missing.

“All right, I’m thinking we break into three teams,” Ethan told his friends. “Rocky, you, Drew, and Brock head west toward Eagle Point. Zeke and I will take the Barker Mill Trail where it branches off from the Fallport Creek Trail to the east. Raid, you and Tal go where Duke leads you.”

As always, Raid was there with his bloodhound. The dog had a better recovery rate than the men did. Duke had been trained to search based on scent. All he needed was a piece of the missing person’s clothing or something he or she had touched recently, and his nose would go to the ground and he’d be off. He could follow a trail from miles away…if he could catch a scent.

The only issue was that Duke wasn’t a cadaver dog. If a person was deceased, their scent changed and couldn’t be tracked by Raid’s dog. And in these woods, a person’s body decayed very quickly. Not to mention, animals usually found the body before anyone else, and nature took over.

If Trent was alive, Duke would find him. If not…well, it could
