Chapter 19

Jaden felt, for a moment, that he had come full circle. He was standing once again in a sewer, just as he had lived for all those years in Lessertown.

Except it wasn’t exactly a sewer. It was a hidden tunnel that had once been a sewer and was now used to store hay for the winter season, to keep it dry. And it was making him sneeze.

Upon their arrival to Marie’s parents’ estate, the servants had her with great joy. They had happily led Jaden, Malory and especially the twins – who were famous even in Obsidia – to their current location. Now, as Marie visited with her parents, they waited for her in this strange storage area and ate bowls of a hearty stew unknowingly donated by the masters of the house.

As Jaden ate the fish stew, wolfing it down, he realized that he hadn’t eaten in almost two days. He was starving and glad that Marie needed time to perform her daughterly duties with her parents while they waited.

He kept glancing around, still impressed with the size of the sewers here. As with most city infrastructure in Malabar, the sewers in Obsidia were originally constructed by the Elves, or that’s what they claimed.

As mysterious as the history and civilization of the Elves was, everyone wanted to claim their part of it. Jaden could see commonalities in the workmanship on the stones in the walls, ceiling, and floor and those that he had lived amongst in the sewers of Lessertown.

The servant who brought them the pot of stew told Jaden that this section of Obsidia was originally a high density, popular quarter in the original city, in the time of the Elves. It needed far more infrastructure then, especially sewers. Over many centuries, the area had changed to having far fewer, far larger houses and far less population in the simulated rural setting.

It seemed incredible just how central the Elves were to everything that was Malabar. All the major cities were built on the ruins of ancient Elven cities. Much of the infrastructure of the cities was still Elven, many buildings were made with old Elven stones or columns, scavenged from ruins.

Jaden wondered if they even knew any longer how to build such things or were entirely reliant on what had been bequeathed to them by the Elves. They were like orphans who had never really learned to live on their own, Jaden thought.

The clatter of chains on the large, round portal in the ceiling startled Jaden out of his reverie.

He realized that he’d been staring off into the middle distance so long that the spoonful of stew in his hand had grown cold. He shoved it into his mouth and swallowed it without chewing.

Light poured in from above as the lid was removed with difficulty, and a set of stairs unfolded into the main space. Then feet came down the steps, first one set and then more.

Marie was followed by a portly, middle-aged couple. He wore the one piece outfit of a gardener, while she was dressed as a cook.
