Captain Lieutenant Vasili Rutil sat across the table from his old Spetsnaz unit commander. The officers’ club had a number of quiet alcoves where old comrades could sit and swap tales of past deeds and times gone by. For the lieutenant and Captain Rostov, some of the deeds they were speaking of had yet to be done.

“So, Vasili,” Rostov said as he reached across the table and poured a drink. “You have done very well in pulling the old squad together.”

“It wasn’t very hard, sir,” Rutil responded. “As soon as they heard you had a mission, you couldn’t keep them away. Frolik would have gone AWOL from his command if that transfer hadn’t gone through.”

“Frolik is about as dependable and steadfast as the mountains themselves,” Rostov said with a chuckle.

“Only to you, sir,” Rutil continued as he picked up his glass. “To everyone else, he’s about as dependable as a bear with a toothache. About the same size as one too, come to think of it. You were the one who led that rescue mission against the mujahideen. Those Afghan women who staked him out wouldn’t have left anything recognizable as human.”

“I was just sorry we couldn’t have gotten all of the men out,” Rostov said regretfully.

“That was the general’s problem,” Vasili said bitterly. “Him, and those damned politicians.”

A long silence settled over the two men as they thought of the men they had left behind in the mountains of Afghanistan. The war had been a long and bloody one for both sides. After a few early successes, the Soviet Union had quickly found itself bogged down in a guerrilla war reminiscent of the U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

“Well, we’re going to have the last word over those people who sold this country out,” Rostov said, anger rising in his voice. “Those old women in the Politburo and the pet dogs they raised in rank in the military have no idea what it means to be a fighter in the front ranks.”

“But are you sure this General Stankevich is the one you want to follow?” Vasili said in a low voice.

“He will be as deeply involved as we are Vasili,” Rostov said in a conspiratorial tone. “The only difference between us is that we shall be the ones in direct possession of the weapons and not him. I never intended to turn all of them over to him. If it comes down to a betrayal by anyone, we will still hold the upper hand. We can show these dogs what it means to have a will of iron, and a hand of one to match.”

“But what of this KGB border officer he has put on to us?” Vasili asked.

“He is exactly as Stankevich said he was—a thug and nothing more. He has been a blot on the record of all good Soviets for long enough,” Rostov said in disgust. “At least when we get rid of him, it will do some direct good.
