Dinner that night at Kelsey’s parents’ house was great, actually. They sat around talking and reminiscing about stuff from the past while they ate pot roast and potatoes. Her parents were a little wary of him at first, bringing up some of his more notable high school pranks in a way that made it clear they weren’t sure whether or not they should hold a grudge, but he’d turned up the charm and had eventually won them over—especially by bringing up some of the especially epic pranks Kelsey had played on him in return. They hadn’t heard those stories before. It was nice, talking about that stuff, some of which he’d nearly forgotten entirely. But it also reminded Ryan about how strange it felt to operate in the civilian world again. He felt a bit out of place, removed from it all, like he was in a foreign land and learning the customs.

Of course, he was already feeling a bit unsettled because his investigations that day hadn’t really panned out. He hadn’t gotten hold of any surveillance footage, though a couple people said they’d get back to him. He hadn’t had much luck tracking down information about the building’s former tenants, either. All in all, it felt like he hadn’t gotten much done with his day.

As they were finishing up with her mom and Kelsey was saying her goodbyes, Ryan checked his phone and found that one of the people he’d asked about surveillance footage earlier in the day had called back, saying that he had something Ryan might want to see.

Once they were outside, Ryan handed Kelsey the keys. “I need to make a call. Go ahead and get in and start the car so you don’t get cold.”

He hit redial on the number and waited for them to answer.

“Jet’s Auto Body and Towing.”

“Hi, this is Ryan Ward, returning your call,” he said, shuffling slightly next to the car to keep warm. Well, that, and to disperse some of his nervous energy. They could really use a bit of good news on the case front. “You said you found something in the surveillance footage?”

Please say you found something.

“Oh yeah,” the guy said. “I think I might have.”

Ryan avoided doing a fist pump, barely. “Great. Can I swing by now and take a look at it?”

“Sorry, man. Can’t now. Shop’s closed and I just got an emergency call for a tow across town for an accident. Could take a while. Call me back tomorrow and we’ll set something up.”

Well, fuck. He sighed, his breath frosting on the chilly air. “Okay. Will do. Thanks.”

It wasn’t the break he’d hoped for, but it was something.

He said as much to Kelsey as he climbed inside the car, warm air from the vents blasting him.

“Well, it’s not like we could’ve done much with it tonight anyway,” she said, shrugging.

He fastened his seatbelt, frowning. “Yeah, I guess.”

But in his mind, he felt stymied, like he was letting his dad down somehow by not going full throttle on this thing.
