In Moscow the chess championship began. Eight of the Soviet Union’s finest players had been chosen to contest the thrice-weekly matches, which were held at various locations in the capital. They were given wide coverage in the press and on the radio, and people from all over the country avidly followed each twist and turn. Several early games were interrupted by air-raid alerts, but the eight men soon decided they would rather carry on playing than let the Germans decide the timing of their moves. The eventual winner, Lieutenant Mazel, overcame one formidable handicap–he was serving with a unit just outside Moscow, and spent the weeks of the championship in a near-permanent commute between the city and the fighting.
