CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Tabby recognized most of the guests wandering around the immense backyard of Sofia’s home, either from last week’s party at the bowling alley, or from the dance academy. She assumed that the people she didn’t know were probably friends of Sofia’s parents. Unless they were private security, dressed casually to blend with everyone else.

She wouldn’t be surprised at that. Sofia’s father—Bogdan Rybak—had been some kind of high-level politician back in Belarus before he’d been targeted for assassination. When he’d moved his whole family and sought asylum in the U.S., Lane and several other SEALs had initially provided protection for them. But that deal was over, so it made sense that other people had been brought in to keep them safe now. Tabby hoped Sofia and her younger sister, Maria, didn’t need guards anymore. Those kids deserved a normal life.

Tabby honestly hadn’t been in the mood for a big party like this when she couldn’t think about anything but Ace being away and in possible danger, but Laurissa had insisted she needed to get out of her own head for a while, so she’d finally given in. Besides, Tiff had wanted to come and hang out with Sofia, and Tabby was quickly discovering she couldn’t deny her little sister anything.

Tabby looked around the perfectly manicured yard, wondering where Tiff was. Sofia had shown up within seconds of their arrival, dragging Tiff off with a teenage squeal of delight. She hadn’t seen either of them since.

“I recognize that look,” Laurissa said, appearing at Tabby’s side, handing her a hard seltzer. “Don’t worry. I saw Tiff and Sofia playing badminton with a bunch of other teens, including the Travers’ twins.”

Tabby had started to relax, until she heard that part. Then some kind of maternal instinct she hadn’t even known she possessed reared up like a lioness. “Travers twins? Who are they and should I go talk to them about staying on the far side of the net from my little sister?”

Laurissa laughed and shook her head, pushing her blonde hair behind an ear. “Kayden and Ashton Travers are the sons of a recently retired SEAL—Kurt—and his wife, Melissa, as well as the younger brothers of yet another SEAL on the Team—Sam. I’ve only met them once, but they seem like good kids. Though I doubt Tiff and Sofia will care about that. The girls just think they’re cute.”

Tabby didn’t know Kurt and Melissa, but she vaguely remembered meeting Sam and his girlfriend at the bowling alley. He was a nice guy.

Still…

“I was almost feeling better until you said that.” Tabby frowned. “I’d be much happier if they were ugly.”

“That’s horrible!” Laurissa said with a laugh. “But I completely understand. Come on, let’s go make sure your sister and Sofia are making good choices.”

They rounded the corner of the large house, finding a group of about a dozen teens more focused on giggling and having a good time than playing badminton. Tabby immediately caught sight of Tiff standing near a tall teen boy with dark hair, brown eyes, and a wide smile on his face.
