Chapter Five

Britt expected the churning bubbles he recalled from when Dare had transformed. Except, that didn’t happen. Instead, he didn’t even see a ripple break the surface. Well, not that wasn’t caused by the shark circling a couple of dozen yards away.

And isn’t that a bizarre thought?

Curious, Britt settled his mask over his face and breathed, confirming everything was working. Then he eased under the surface. He peered through the water, surprised to see just how clear it was. The lights overhead illuminated everything just right so he could see at least twenty feet in every direction.

To his left, Britt found what he was looking for. He felt his heart rate spike as he tried to understand exactly what he was seeing. Gerard didn’t look like Gerard anymore... but he wasn’t an animal yet either. His body was going through a series of twists and contortions. Britt blinked a few times, doing his best to push down his shock.

Then... it was over... and something else floated where Gerard had once been.

Britt squinted at the small creature, knowing he’d never seen anything like it. The little animal floated toward him, and he stared in wonder. He could make out the head and body, and it did remind him of a seahorse. The body was a vibrant orange color, but just as Gerard had described, there were a number of odd seaweed-like appendages growing from his body in various shades of green.

As it drew closer, Britt was surprised by the mass of the thing. He figured it had to measure around fifty centimeters from the tip of its cylindrical snout to the end of its tail. The body was as big around as his fist and appeared to be covered in scale-like material.

Makes sense, him claiming to be a fish and all.

Recalling that shifters were sentient in animal form—and this is Gerard—Britt lifted a hand and reached for him. The sea dragon peered at him out of one black eye. Then it turned its head and stared at him with the other.

After a few seconds of perusal, the sea dragon swam closer to him. The beast rested its head against the back of Britt’s crooked forefinger and nuzzled it. Accepting that as an invitation, Britt skimmed his fingertips down the side of the sea dragon’s neck and body, then along one of the fronds. The scales felt smooth and cool against Britt’s flesh, and he could just stare in amazement as his heart hammered in his chest.

I don’t know how this is possible.

Just damn.

Gerard’s sea dragon allowed Britt to explore him for a moment. Then the creature flicked its tail at his fingers and swam a few feet away. It turned back to look at Britt, and bubbles blew from the end of its snout.

Britt wondered if that was the sea dragon’s way of teasing him. Still, he got the message. Swishing his flippers and angling his arms, he began swimming after the beast.

The sea dragon led the way through the water, and Britt noticed the rock wall closing in on his left.
