CHAPTER 16

Pentheus now drew near to the Nostros looking for Talos. Standing on the dock alongside of the ship he pulled up his collar, straightened his belt and adjusted his short sword, looking upward at the main deck as all hands were busy preparing the ship for the next mission.

Requesting permission to come aboard the Nostros, he walked along the gangway towards Blasios, who immediately recognizing his rank and saluted him granting him permission to come aboard.

“Is there something I can do for you tribune?”

“Yes, I'm looking for one, Talos, would he be aboard?”

“He is and the Nostros will be getting underway for Misenum on the morrow; would you like to speak with him?”

“Most certainly, it’s a matter of utmost importance that I speak with him before your ship leaves for Misenum.”

Blasios being the devoted military man he was, stood at attention giving full due respect to Pentheus and responded quickly.

“If you will wait here sir, I will bring him to the quarterdeck immediately.”

Blasios walked in military gait to the ships cargo hold and disappeared down below, as Pentheus looked about the ship, all the while trying to disguise his pure admiration for the remarkable efficiency of the crew.

Several minutes had passed and finally Talos appeared at the doors of the cargo hold and came walking up to him with a broad smile on his face, recognizing the significant change in his uniform; the silver plated helmet with an unmistakable crest mounting.

“Am I in the presence now of a true tribune? It has sure taken place quickly!”

“Yes Talos, I’ve been promoted as tribune and it was all unexpected; it is one of several things I must discuss with you before you leave for Misenum; can you get permission to leave the ship for a small time?”

“Yes, Blasios has already given me permission to leave the ship as long as it doesn’t take too long, as you know I must be about preparing to get underway. He is really something isn't he? Blasios is all navy I would say. We'll be leaving tomorrow, but I must first find Remicas and Leonidas. I have permission for one or two passengers to travel on board with us to Misenum and then to Rome itself. Let’s go to the tavern and I’ll wait there for them there, while we drink to your promotion as tribune!”

“Well said young Talos; but there has been some grave goings on that I must tell you of that must be somehow corrected; by the gods and they will be!” Pentheus put his hand on Talos' shoulder and they walked across the gangway to the dock and on to the tavern.

After finding a table and ordering a drink, they toasted his promotion and then Pentheus began explaining to Talos of Podargos and the plot to have Remicas killed upon leaving Milos, which ended up failing. He continued explaining that when the Nostros, was thought to have foundered somewhere between Milos and Crete, Podargos had been counting on the fact that it was the end of his friend Remicas, clearing the way for Demades to take his place.
