CRAIG
Itâs rare when I end up in the office, it happens about twice a month. If that. The perks of running this place mean Jay and I do very little work. We spend most of our time at home, only going on site when we are short-staffed, we donât even need to work the phones anymore, thatâs Amyâs job.
âMr Barnes,â she practically bounds off her seat when she sees me enter.
âAmy,â I offer her a curt nod in response and head for my office. Well, Jay and I share despite there being ample space for two. We just end up in the same room anyway.
Jay is more of a people person out of us both, he is on a first-name basis with Amy. She tends to refer to me as Mr Barnes or Sir when Iâm around.
At the end of the day, sheâs an employee, the formality makes it easier to keep things professional here.
I step into the office and sigh at the decorating job Lottie and Tiffy did here. I think Tiffy wanted somewhere to act out her Fifty Shades fantasy. Sheâs down here with Jason a hell of a lot more than Lottieâs here with me.
There is a pile of contracts on the desk, and Iâm really not arsed in dealing with them, but itâs better to work here than to go back to Jessicaâs. I did my part anyway. I pulled out everything. Jason had Stephen install the new floors upstairs, and Iâll probably only be called to help put in the new kitchen when the guys are done rewiring and tiling the place.
A hesitant knock sounds from the door. I glance up to see Amy slowly edging her way into the room. âCan I get you anything, sir?â
âNo, Amy. Iâm good thanks,â I look about the room and ask, âwhen was the last time Jason was here?â
âTwo days ago,â I could be mistaking but Iâm almost certain that there is a hue of pink in her cheeks.
âAlone?â
âWith his wife,â she admits. Oh yeah, that pink is turning crimson. Poor girl.
âAh,â instinctively I push away from the desk.
âI already cleaned up after they left,â her brown eyes are locked on the floor as if the mere sight of the desk brings back memories she would rather forget.
âRemind me to sort out a pay rise for you, yeah.â
She stifles a laugh, nods, and then turns for the door. As soon as I hear the click, I turn Spotify on full blast and get started with the paperwork.
The next thing I know, Iâm glancing at the clock to see itâs 12:30. Those three hours flew by. Nothing on my phone from Lottie or Jay so I ignore the other messages.
Digging through the drawers, I find a packet of cigarettes and a lighter stuffed in the back of the second last drawer. A box of condoms is shoved in the topâobviously Jasonâs.
Cracking open the window, I light up. Iâve cut right back since having kids, usually only having the odd cigarette on a night out, but after the week Iâve had, I think I deserve one.
