Chapter 6

Hunter and I stepped out of the maze, hand in hand. I stole one last glance at the place I’d dreamt of for so long. A place that had spawned new dreams with Hunter. Holiday cheer sparkled with fairy lights, mistletoe, evergreen boughs, pine cones, and cranberries. The embellishment had shone like stars above us, casting spells on the lush greenery that shrouded us moments ago. I was always sad to see the close of the holiday season. When the spread of joy and love capitulated into apathy. Strangers became strangers again. What would the new season bring Hunter and me? A pang of loss struck me, filling me with dread.

“Are you okay?” Hunter asked, his voice gentle and laced with concern.

“Yeah,” I reached up to caress the side of his face. Sighing when he turned his cheek into my palm. “It’s just… that was magical. I hate to leave it all behind.”

“Agreed.” He gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. “But who knows? Maybe there’s more magic waiting for us beyond this maze.” I nodded, appreciating his optimistic outlook. At least one of us should be hopeful, right?

Laughter, clinking glasses, and thumping bass welcomed us back to the party. The tempo had changed after midnight from the classical orchestra to an exhilarating deejay. The chaos of the party was a blaring assault when compared to the intimate world we’d left. Scanning the crowd, I searched for familiar faces. Where were they? They said they would worry about me. But when I didn’t see either Taylor or Nella, I was the worried one.

“Hey, it’s all right.” Hunter’s lips caressed the shell of my ear as he spoke above the crowd. “You’re not alone. I’m here with you.” His mind-reading game was on point.

“Thank you.” I squeezed his hand gratefully.

“Let’s find your friends, yeah?”

“Sounds good,” I nodded. Almost matching his cheerful enthusiasm. But deep down, I knew that finding my friends wouldn’t change the fact that the fairy-tale world we’d left was slipping further away with each passing moment.

We searched from one room of the ballroom to the other. I looked in the ladies’ room and checked my messages. They’d disappeared. Totally against our girl code. Something was up. I sent them a group chat. Texting them, I was alright, and asking if they were. They both responded with a thumbs-up emoji. They each thought that I was with the other. My BFFs apologized profusely and explained that something had come up. I shook my head at them, wondering what something’s name was.

“Would you like me to take you home?” Hunter asked. His eyes scanned my face, and lines creased his forehead. Not gonna lie. Spending more time with him, even if it was a simple drive home, softened their defection.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to impose,” I stammered, lying my ass off. Like I wouldn’t take every second with him I could.

“Of course. It’d be my pleasure,” he replied, the corners of his mouth lifting into a wicked smile. “And your pleasure as well.
