Chapter 15

The next morning was a bit of a slow one, but it was nothing a little bit of caffeine couldn’t fix. Saffy dragged herself out of bed behind me, a rarity as she usually sped to her food bowl. An afternoon with her catnip mouse followed by an evening cuddling with Ashley had apparently worn her out.

She waited by her dish as I heated the tea water and grabbed a Monday muffin that I’d been saving for myself from two days ago. Walter and Paul had told me there was something special about them the last time I’d talked to them at the Old Templeton Diner, and since then, I’d made sure to keep them on hand for myself. I wasn’t entirely sure, but they may have been on to something. Monday muffins left me with a bit more pep in my step and a cheerier attitude. But maybe it was all just the power of suggestion. I unlocked the door to the kitchen, then stepped inside and flicked on the lights. There was something about the morning after the cleaning crew had been here. The stainless-steel fixtures shined and were smudge free for the next few minutes, the floors were mopped and reflected the light from above, and not an errant speck of flour could be found anywhere. I’d have to remember this moment as things got progressively crazier through the festival.

After dropping the aprons I’d washed yesterday into their bin, I stood in the corner by the sinks drinking my tea, waiting for my bakers to come in.

Lily walked in right on time, back to her usual routine. A broad smile spanned her face, and her pinkish hair almost glowed. Then I realized the pink had streaks of pale, almost-white yellow in it, giving it that appearance.

“You look utterly radiant. I take it the date went well?”

Lily spun in a circle, her arms rising slightly away from her side as she did. “It was amazing. Then I spent the night in
