Chapter Twelve

Gemma

By some miracle of planning, my final period on Wednesday afternoons was free, which meant I could get into film club early, take my favorite station in the corner where I wouldn’t be surrounded on all sides by people, and work for an hour in silence. I liked my film club pals well enough, and we were all friendly in that absorbed-in-our-projects kind of way, but I also liked my space where I could bury myself without having to stop and talk all the time.

Because of course, now, layered over all the usual college chatter was the talk of finals and graduation in a few weeks. I was so saturated by it all that my brain had reached switch-off point every time I heard the words college, finals, or graduation.

Mr. Williams, our film club guru and supervisor, came in and said hi to me, then assumed his position at the desk up front and in the corner. He mostly just sat there playing around on his laptop with something—the rumor was it was porn, but we all knew he was actually editing videos of his son who’d just learned to walk—unless we needed him to help or give advice. His main message to me was to focus on one portion of the editing process, like getting all the visuals put together from start to finish, then move to audio or VO from start to finish, instead of completing little sections and then doing final continuity edits at the end. He was probably right, and maybe college would make me change my ways, but for now I knew what I wanted in my head and the way I worked, worked for me.

I spent almost three hours in the video lab playing around with slo-mo shots, trying to get them at the exact speed and length so it didn’t look like a gimmick. Of course, the slo-mo just accentuated Stacey and all her insane skill and hotness. Maybe this project was a bad idea, considering I could barely get through a filming or editing session without drooling. Little bit late to abandon it now, Gemma… Move on, be an adult, accept that to Stacey you’re just her best friend.

A flurry of movement outside the room caught my eye, and I looked up to see Erin waving and pulling stupid faces through the huge fishbowl windows along the top half of the wall. I discreetly waved and motioned she should come in. She slipped through the lab with the stealth of a spy, murmuring greetings to some of the other film nerds before she pulled out the chair beside mine. “Hey.”

“Hey. What’re you doing here?”

She leaned back. “Enjoying the peace. My options were to study here where headphones block out the noise of everyone talking about sports and sex, or study at home where nothing blocks out Mom and Dad.”

I really didn’t know what to say. When I’d first found out how unpleasant her home situation was, I’d said right away that she was welcome at my house any afternoon after school to study.
