The next two days went quickly. The community was so busy there was no time to think or worry. The first day they finished up a few things on Jerry’s fences, then extended the height of Jason’s to at least six feet, seven in the front. That went fast because they didn’t have to put up any new posts. With that finished they strung the razor wire. Jason had four pairs of Kevlar gloves that were very hard to cut, but putting the coils up was still dangerous, as parts could whip back and cut you other places. They had lots of minor cuts by the time they finished but it was worth it. Getting over the fences would now be a whole lot more difficult.

With all the confusion and the scare with Michael they had forgotten about their scavenging mission in the vacant homes. Jason reminded Jerry, and he said Sally would help. After dinner they met up, Jason’s team consisting of himself, Alicia, James, and Sophie. He thought six people was sufficient. They were all armed, dressed in black, and they had large canvas bags and two wagons including the one the Potts had filled with shit. They were disappointed that four of the ten homes had already been cleared of anything worthwhile. They did well at the other six, however, getting enough dry, canned and shelf stable food, plus water, to require three trips home. They unloaded all the food and water in Jerry’s garage. The trip also produced four handguns, two shotguns, and three rifles, including a high-quality scoped hunting rifle chambered in .308 Winchester and two assault rifles. They also got an impressive amount of ammunition, though Jason wished they had more of the .308. Jerry and Jason split the guns and ammo, though Jerry gave up most of it, including the hunting rifle. He said Jason had a larger group, while he just had Sally.

With their boundaries under control, they turned to the street barricades they intended to build. Jason, James, and Michael were up before seven AM. Michael said he was tired of sitting around, and his wound looked good, with no signs of infection. He agreed to take it easy. They pulled the pickup into the front driveway and attached heavy thirty-foot chains to the back. They started by dragging Jason, Michael, and James’ cars up the road to the first pinch point about 400 feet away. Then they moved to Jerry and Sally’s two cars. The crazy horse lady had two cars and a very new pickup truck to donate.

Even better, she had an old pneumatic lift that was used to move piles of hay bales around in a barn, that pumped up like a jack for a car. It had a three-ton limit. This meant they could hoist up smaller sedans, like James’ and put them on top of the first tier of cars, making the barricade far more effective. For the first tier, they put two heavier cars engine to engine in the middle, remembering the mistake the other neighborhood made.
