Chapter Eighteen: Kate

I'VE SPENT THE LAST twenty-four hours brainstorming ideas. Ruth wants to meet a guy, but she doesn't want to take any kind of action to make it happen. She's rejected Swipr, refuses to make a profile on internet dating sites, and, according to a text from her previous spirit guide, she said no thanks to a friend who wanted to set her up on a blind date.

There's nothing more frustrating than a charge who wants something, but doesn't do anything about it! When I was doing missions with Peter, one of our charges wanted a job, but he didn't apply for anything! Peter and I had to get creative—really creative. Our charge's friend had a brother who was opening a bakery, and we practically had to throw this person into our charge's path. I think it's going to be the same situation with Ruth. Orias and I are going to have to get inventive.

Orias doesn't offer much help, though. He's good for manipulation of social media, but that's about it. Since Ruth refuses to waste time on any social media platform, I don't think Orias' special trick is going to provide much help.

The next day, we follow Ruth to school. As we watch her read a book to second graders, Orias grumbles and says, “We don't have to hang around her all day, you know. We can and should take breaks.”

“I know,” I reply, but I have no time for a break! My eyes narrow as I study our charge. I keep waiting for a brilliant idea to come to me.

“You know, you'd make a good angel,” Orias says. “You're very dedicated to your missions. Angels are always the most dedicated... well... unless they're fallen ones like me.”

I ignore Orias and focus on the thoughts in my head. Maybe... maybe one of Ruth's students has a handsome single dad? It's possible, but how would I find out? I'd have to follow them all home, one-by-one, to scope out the situation. Even if I did find an eligible single parent, I'd have to arrange a meeting. Maybe... a PTA meeting? Ugh, I don't know!

Time flies, class ends, and Ruth dismisses her students with a buoyant smile. Orias said she wasn't pretty, but I think her smile alone makes up for any flaws. She has a lovely smile, and she seems like a sweetheart. I want good things for Ruth.

After class, while Ruth fusses with papers on her desk, a man enters the room and dumps her trash. I recognize him right away, because I saw his picture on the school staff website.

It's Justin Ruiz, the janitor—and he isn't alone. Two spirits, a girl and a guy, follow him into the classroom.

“Hey!” the girl greets us. “I didn't think we'd run into any spirits here. I guess you never know, huh?”

“Hi,” I return her greeting with a smile, but my smiles never look right, unlike Ruth's. Ruth's smiles are always lovely. Mine are dopey and forced. “Are you two on a mission?”

I recognize the girl's partner, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
