“Hey, listen to this.”
I looked up at Aidan from the pot I stirred and took in the framed picture and notebook in his hands.
“This is what your grandfather wrote on October 30 th 1995.”
“When I was eighteen months old.” I whispered the words at the pot.
“Yeah, listen.”
“I received a letter from Thomas today. My son has officially disowned me because, as he so beautifully put it, I disgust him and he doesn’t want a depraved character like me around his son. He accuses me of having lived a lie all the years I was married to his mother. The lad has no idea. Mary and I were a match made in heaven. She loved me and I adored her. Of course I found myself attracted to men even while we were married. But I never acted on it, never felt the need. For thirty-three years she was all I wanted and needed. He knows how devastated I was when she died. I remember him losing his patience with me when I still couldn’t get myself to function six months after the funeral. I can still hear him telling me to man up.
“I guess he didn’t mean for me to fall in love again. Or maybe that would have been fine if only the object of my affections had been female. I’m not sure what it says about me that I can’t give up Sean, even if it might mean hanging on to my family. After his letter I have no problem leaving Thomas behind. It’s going to break my heart to give up on Lennart though. I may never see that beautiful boy again. He may never know who I am, or was, or only learn the lies his father will tell him.
“I can’t walk away from Sean. I’ve tried to imagine living without him and just the thought of it makes me panic. I’m so sorry, little Lennart. I wish I could tell you how much I love you and how badly it hurts to have to leave you in the past. I hope you’ll understand I didn’t have a choice if you ever find out the truth.
“I’ll be severing all bonds with my son tomorrow. I’ve instructed my bank to settle one hundred thousand Punts in his account. That’s the last he’ll ever get from me.”
The tears had started about halfway through Aidan reading the entry. By the time he came to little Lennart I couldn’t see the food on the cooker anymore for the tears. Once again I tried to imagine what my life might have been like if my grandfather hadn’t been forced out of it and came up blank. All I’d seen in the pictures, the little bits I’d read in the notebook, seemed to suggest he was a good man, loving husband and father and honorable person. I couldn’t help wishing I had memories about someone like that.
I’d gotten so lost in my thoughts and misery I didn’t notice Aidan had moved until I felt his arms around me, and his chin on my shoulder.
