EIGHTEEN

New clothing for Esenna and me arrived to Xavyn’s door later the following morning. Both Xavyn and I would have slept right through the delivery if the carrier—a young fae girl seamstress—hadn’t started a fight with Esenna, refusing to hand over the garments to a Volare. She obviously hadn’t been told who she might encounter. Despite the harshness, the awakening had been welcomed for its necessity. Otherwise, between exhaustion and the comfort of being wrapped up in blankets with Xavyn, I would have gladly remained in bed for the entire day.

The night before, while we had scoured many books in his room along with those he’d brought with him, he discussed the council meeting. He had relayed information to Elige regarding the humans, being honest with a majority of what had happened in Garlin, leaving out the information of my identity and its confirmation by a dying Queen Havilah. He told her about Queen Meirin’s treachery and her search for a feather, feigning ignorance about what feather it might be. Most of the discussions involved what had occurred with The Divide. She was interested to learn I had indeed been in the human lands, but also understood that with the conditions of magic, my crossing had likely meant I was similar to Xavyn, having the ability to go between. That led to more questions about others’ ability to cross and what we’d witnessed in Suspir as well. He tread lightly with the mer information, discussing Amias’ change and explaining how he’d been the one to force it or let him die. Davine, though distanced from her family, showed some relief that her brother was still alive. And though Elige’s ravens’ travel there was infrequent, they’d known for some time that Esenna lived with Amias. They also accepted Xavyn’s reasoning for bringing her along with us, citing my fondness and protection rather than Hux’s threats.

We’d been up hours past when Esenna had retired and had found only the theories we’d already known, either read before or what we’d learned from Leth. I’d chosen not to discuss my growing concerns with him. We were too focused on what was in front of us and what he’d discussed with the council that it felt wrong to bring my objections into the light. I would have to tell him soon, though. Because deep inside I knew if the feather happened to appear in front of me, I wasn’t sure I’d want it. I’d done so much damage already.

“She wants to talk with you. Show you around,” Xavyn said after we’d dressed. “Don’t worry about birds. Most tend to keep away from Usli because of the ravens.”

“And Esenna?” I asked, pulling on my cloak and sliding my new plaits over my shoulder. I’d redone them as we read the night before, separating them into larger sections to finish quickly. They held well and were functional enough for combat should the need arise.

“Yes, her as well.” Xavyn slipped his fingers under the fold of my cloak’s downed hood and helped free another plait with a smile.
